This should be a movie
I bought this book as a mild joke at a comic book shop a few years ago. After sitting down and actually reading it this became one of my favorite stories. I make everyone I know read it as such. Such a benign and simple concept with an epic twist of an ending. I hope you can read this and enjoy the book as much as I have.

You better be sure you want it.
My niece wanted this but didn't want to spend her own money on it. She's a budding cartoonist. I was able to review it after I returned it because she got it as a gift from another relative. Here's what I think. The art work is nice, not great (or even close). The drawing is simplistic, but less so than the story. In a marketplace where kids may be taken in, products like this should be described in full. An accurate description of this book is a simple story about a cop on the moon who winds up one of two people patrolling the moon as machines replace people as service providers because over the span of time (eons perhaps) that is the only way the services can be made profitable (worthwhile) to whoever provides them. The story is told largely with drawings similar to that on the cover and the text, if aggregated, would equal the length of a very, very short paragraph. Reviews rave about the philosophical questions raised and its poignancy: both claims are highly over rated. The philosophical questions raised are as deep as a shallow puddle, and the poignancy is exceeded by any bad hearth-break western song. You really have to like comics and be a fan of minimalism for its own sake (and I mean its own sake, because the minimalism here adds nothing). You should also beware that the shipping costs, paid both ways even if you are a prime member (as I am) means that you are out the price of the book if you return it. That's right, especially for kids, this is a forced sale. Caveat emptor, if you don't like it, you are going to have to pay 50% of the book's value to have it delivered and the second 50% of its value to reurnt it. It's like buying it cheap at twice the price! UPS and Amazon are the only ones that make money on it.

Charming, and Chilling
I didn't know what to expect, as someone who doesn't know much about the genre of graphic novellas, but I was charmed and chilled by Tom Gauld's brilliant concept and execution. The language and the drawings are spare, the lunar landscape is understandably spare, and the story packs a huge wallop. Basically, a man is in charge of a one-person police outpost on the moon at a time when the other moon settlers are giving up and going home. Yipes. I've read this little book several times since I received it yesterday, and I applaud the imaginative mind that created it.

Same Difference
You would think that on the moon there would be different problems and issues. Nope. Life is life and people are people. Very good graphic novel; simply but beautifully drawn. Written with dry wit and lots of space to remind you where the characters are.

and the experience of watching others around you escape - feeling happy for their new life but also an increase in ...
I once worked for a large corporation that was closing down my area, slowly and painfully. I applied for transfer to another divisionI don't think I've ever read a book that so perfectly captured the feelings of loneliness and worthlessness that come with that experience. It also captures the crushing boredom and tedium that accompanies that slow end, and the experience of watching others around you escape - feeling happy for their new life but also an increase in your own isolation.

This was my favorite comic of 2017
This was my favorite comic of 2017. It's quiet and beautiful and sad and uplifting. It's so hard to capture the idea of time passing and calm, quietude in written form and Gauld is a Da Vinci, painting a world the makes you feel hushed and introspective and just a little sombre, but in the most amazing, gentle, and wonderful manner. 10/10. This book cannot be lauded enough.

Expected More
Based on the rave reviews, especially the NPR endorsement, I had high hopes for this comic. While the stark visuals go well with the spare story, I don't think the parts add up to much of a whole. There are some nice touches, like the titular officer's apartment complex gradually shrinking in size to match the outflow of population, the narrative feels like it's reaching for depth in its depiction of solitude and meaning without actually achieving it.

Simple.
It’s such a simple book, but it does a lot, each frame is packed with character.

Well written and beautifully illustrated
A simple tale of the last people to be left on a moon settlement and the experience this brings. Beautifully illustrated and presented in in a nice quality hardback cover. The story is light enough for most ages to follow and should take an experience reader no more than 20 mins to complete, but one that I am sure I will be revisiting many times.

Loved this.
Beautifully drawn, wonderfully atmospheric and with laugh out loud moments. Would make a great short film. You can almost hear the lunar silence…

An absolute joy
I got this out the local library, read it in one sitting and immediately ordered 2 copies from Amazon (1 for a friend). An amusing, melancholy, happysad tale that I reach for regularly. I’d love an animated version one day.
