Hootenanny is the place where the Replacements began to branch out from the breakneck punk that characterized their first two records. The brilliant thing about Hootenanny is that it teeters at the brink of maturity but never makes the dive into that deep pool. Paul Westerberg nevertheless dips a toe into those murky waters with "Color Me Impressed," as good an angst-ridden rocker as he would ever write, and the heartbroken "Within Your Reach," which presented a break from the Replacements' past in its slower tempo. It lurches to life with the folk piss-take "Hootenanny" before spinning out of control with "Run It," a piece of faux-core harder and funnier than anything on Stink. It continues to bounce from extreme to extreme, stopping for a Beatles parody on "Mr. Whirly" and the instrumental "Buck Hill".

This is the band and this is the album that gave me the greatest appreciation of having music in my life
I'm going to thank my parents for buying me Meet the Beatles when I was a kid and friends and sometimes their parents for the diverse music that they introduced to me growing up. This was the band and this was the album however that had the biggest impact on me. There's never going to be anyone like them. And once again,Bob Stinson was a GREAT guitarist- I was fortunate to have seen him perform at Maxwell's & (the) City Gardens.

The third album to hit the Mats' catalog. The Replacements are an amazing band and if you are going to have a collection of their music, this album should not be left behind. All their albums are great, but personally, their Bob Stinson-era (all the way up to 1985's Tim) is too unforgettable and is worth the purchase. Every songs is great and different from each other. A definite purchase.

Worst Replacements Album Ever
The Replacements were a really good band - capable of becoming great legends - so why they cut this piece of junk is a mystery to me - if you want to hear the Replacements at their very worst - trying to sound bad - then buy this album.

Major breakthrough full of underrated gems
I love this album more and more as the years go by with repeated listens. The songs mixed with the bands chemistry (chemically?) at that point in times haunts these recordings. Their most underrated album and the one that made Let It Be and everything after it possible. We miss you Bob

Second best band in America my...
Rolling Stone called REM the best band in America, some other mag said The Mats were the second. This is the only band from the 80s that still matters. I wish I could say U2 was another one but they have become...well...not so relevant would be a polite way to put it and REM is...well, I digress. I lost my last tape of this album in the early nineties and now, almost twenty years since I last heard it, I put it on and remember each lyric, love each song in this not seamlessly over produced but very rough aroung the edges and just wonderful album. I love that not all the songs go together like some 'masterpiece'. This band does not play makeup and wear guitar this band is something special and this is my favorite album they ever put out, EVER. How do you beat a lyric like "Live without your touch, I'll die within your reach?" Good luck trying.

The Replacements!!!
The Replacements, what a Fantastic Band! They influenced countless bands and continue to do so even now. Hootenanny is a great album. It's the first album where the band's ultimate sound reared it's head. It is a great album top to bottom.
