The Red-Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) is a turtle native to the southern United States and northern Mexico, It is and aquatic turtle and spends most of its life in ponds, rivers or lakes. The shell is made of scutes (scales), which are a hard bony material and are used to protect the turtle. The color of the shell is unique to each turtle. It usually has a dark brown or green background with light and dark markings. While some are grey in color and have dark markings around the scutes.
