Great basketball coaching book!
I received the previous version of this book instead of the new one. I keep the old one just because it is such a great book!

Great book
I bought this book as a gift for a family member who was coaching a girl's team. She was very interested in it and thought it was helpful.

You need this to coach.
I've never coached basketball.... never even played! Believe it or not my school hired me to be the head varsity girls coach. This book was a life saver! Great book. A must have for coaches everywhere.

Great coach, bad referee
As an official, I read this book to see if it would give me greater insight into the sport. In that regard, it's excellent. It's helpful to think of weaknesses and strengths in various offensive and defensive schemes, for example, to consider positioning during play.Where the book bothers me is it's explanation of rules. Traveling is about pivot foot, not steps. The travel rule is different for starting a dribble versus passing or shooting. You cannot pivot after landing on both feet after a jump stop. There is no such thing as "over the back.".There are more, but readers please note. Use this book to improve your coaching, but don't argue with the ref because coach Hatchell said that wasn't a travel!

satisfactory addition to a new coach's library
This book is only $22, and it packs a lot of information in for that price. Nowadays, YouTube has generally replaced the book form as a means of coaching instruction, but particularly for new coaches who would like a complete overview on to how to run a middle school or high school basketball program throughout all its phases, this is a good addition to your library.I would prefer a lesser text-to-illustration ratio - I'm more of a visual person - and similarly, fewer drills that are diagrammed more completely. Maybe less written out and more bullet points. My ideal is Bill Kuchar's Coaching High School Basketball Successfully, but Coach Hatchell's book does a better job with question and answer inserts that address the difficult situations that every coach encounters eventually, particularly when just starting. It's nice to hear a commiserating voice from a coach who has been around long enough to be in the top five in career wins, and the advice is unfailingly sound. The addition of "girls" in the title I think requires some examination. There is very little in the content of the book that is gender-specific. Basketball is basketball, for the most part, for all participants. Coach Hatchell does answer the question of "is there is a difference between coaching boys and girls," and the points she brings up are neither demeaning nor dismissive. Most coaches who have coached boys and girls teams - myself included - do think there are some generalities that bear out, and they are good to keep in mind as guidelines. Outside of some of the question and answers specific to this topic, there is nothing in the description of drills, plays, game management, program development, etc. that would differentiate this book from the instruction of, say, Morgan Wooten. It's a nice, complete handbook with a career's worth of insight from a successful coach.

Must have!
I have played basketball for many years and have watched basketball my entire life. However, this is my first year that I will be coaching basketball (middle school girls). This book is an extremely thorough reference for beginning coaches with not much experience. It simplifies things regardless of how much prior knowledge you may have about the sport. There are helpful suggestions for drills, plays, coaching tips, and tips on coaching girls. Overall, a must have for any new coach.

Very practical and uesful
I just wrapped up my season with the 5th and 6th grade girls. This book teaches all the fundamentals you need to get started and more. There are tips on how to keep things simple when it comes to running an offense. This book was really useful.
