A "Wonderful" Thorough Look at a Classic Film
Every book I have read by Stephen Cox, it has been a fun, informative and factual read. I would even say his books on show business are second-to-none. This same sense of fun and a thorough look at the subject is used for this book. A must read for any dedicated fan of "It's a Wonderful Life."

A Wonderful Life it is
This is a short book that fans of the movie will enjoy. There are some tidbits I had not read elsewhere. Most of the books written about this movie suffer from the fact that 40 or 50 years had elapsed by the time anyone thought to write a book. Thus the eroding of people's memories, and the passing of many of the actors.Still the inconsistencies are charming. It was Jimmie Stewart's favorite "picture" and he shot a lot of pictures. His statements, again 40 years later, that the the film was shot in sequence over 7 weeks don't match statements made by Capra that the film was shot over a period of 3 and a half months, and out of sequence, like most films. But who cares? The movie was not a big hit when it first came out. It was billed as a romance, not as a Christmas movie. Critics thought it was sappy.Through clerical error, the film went out of copyright in the 70's and was free to air. Television stations eventually started airing it several times a week during the holiday season. As a result, it gradually became a holiday classic. Enough time had passed that the film was seen by modern day viewers as a mostly accurate depiction of small town life in the 1940's.Why is this film so moving? As we go about our daily routines, we often find them burdensome. There is a lack of meaning or purpose. We are just going through the motions. The little things we do don't matter, no one notices. This movie makes you rethink all that. The book details a scene, cut by Capra, where Clarence the angel confronts Potter about his theft, confronting him as well about his life of selfish penury. In this scene, Potter got what was coming to him.Yet it wasn't included in the movie. Food for thought.
