and admiration for highly intelligent young people was at am all-time high
It would be hard to underestimate the influence the Tom Swift Jr series had on kids in the 1950s the the mid-1960s, when science was the new frontier, and admiration for highly intelligent young people was at am all-time high. However formulaic these books were, much of the pleasure came from expecting to meet again the same characters from the previous volume. Swift, who never aged beyond 18 yrs, was the prototype for an intelligent adventurer like Indiana Jones (and Young Indian Jones). The cliffhanger chapter endings were enormous fun and the science, while far-fetched was based on much of what was known at the time.

Truly like new condition
Very, very good condition for a classic book that is 65 years old! My son loves Tom Swift, and we'll be getting more for him.

combining talents to identify and solve a problem and have the good guys figure it out to save the world -- ...
These are clever stories for 7 to 11 year old future inventors. American classics. The technology is dated, but the themes of loyalty to friends, combining talents to identify and solve a problem and have the good guys figure it out to save the world -- this is refreshing! Long before we had MacGyver, we had Tom Swift

Old time values
This is a great series of books for young boys who have an interest in science. They hold up even after all these years.

ok- still formula fiction
There were apparently two generations of Tom Swift novels; I was into the ones written in the 1950's. They were very good for me at the time, but they were also tight formula fiction. I can't really read these now, they are too predictable. I did love them when I was a kid. They are very good for tween boys, to get them reading. I would compare the ones written in the 20's to the cartoon Speed Racer; the ones written in the 50's are more like a comic book of the time. They are also useful in that they stimulate imagination, the way Star Trek put images in the mass mind of what we now call cell phones.

Great old book from my childhood
I'm working on building up this collection. I want to pass these down to my grandkids. I remember these books from when I was a kid, they are simple reading pleasure. Can't think of anything negative to say about these books from my childhood, they bring back very good memories. The copy I got was in very good condition.

RE: The Tom Swift, Jr. Series of Adventure Novels
I don't recall all the details of this particular novel. What I do remember, though, was the sheer pleasure I got from reading these books in the late 1960s.Always a fascinating invention in each story, and the illustrations were beautiful.Another great series running at about the same time: Rick Brant Science Adventures by John Blaine.Highly recommended.
