The Quantaray by Sunpak XLF-50 has many advance features, such as easy to use controls, articulated hotshoe, wide angle panel and EV adjustments. The Quantaray by Sunpak XLF-50 is compatible with the latest Nikon i-TTL TTL flash technology for seamless integration for ease of use. The Quantaray by Sunpak XLF-50 flash has a high guide number of 65 (ISO 100/feet) which will offer a much greater flash range over built-in flash units found in entry level digital SLR cameras. Flexibility is what the XLF-50 is all about with a 180 degree swivel control panel and hotshoe assembly for complete self-contained storage. Being so compact in the self-contained mode, it is small enough to fit in a pocket or bag at only 3.5-inches deep and less than 7 ounces. When taking photography to the next level, the XLF-50 incorporates a bounce head with detents. For wide angle lenses or additional light diffusion, the easy to use self-storing flip-down diffuser panel makes images come alive. To be in control of flash output, the XLF-50 has five EV adjustments in one half stops for getting the perfect exposure or for use for special effects or control of flash output. The XLF-50 flash runs on 2 AA Alkaline or Ni-MH batteries which keep it small and compact and at the same time provides up to 200 flashes at full power. In addition, the XLF-50 incorporates auto power off feature to keep batteries from going dead.

Great size, could be much better though
If they'd put a manual switch on this thing, it would have been perfect alternative to the small Nikon Speedlights. As it is, it's just meh....

Little flash make your pictures differently
A very well designed and engineered flash, work perfect with my D80 & D300s, trial tested on Sigma and Nikon lenses, bounced, angled, straight flash, iTTL is accurate and pictures came out perfect. EV adjustment is very easy. It didn't earn 5 stars because the start up charging time is a lot longer than expected, recharging time is considerably slow but acceptable. Performance is exactly same as SB400. For $9.99+$5.49 shipping at amazon, you can't get better than this deal.

Great flash for the money
Pros: tiny, lightweight, simple to use, 90 degree vertical swivel, flash correction (EV adjust) from -1 to 1 in 0.5 stops.Cons: recycling rate (time between charges) can be slow (around 1 sec unless batteries are new). No sideways tilt (useful when taking vertical shots), although there are simple fixes.Do you need it: Most of the built-in flashes from Nikon are excelent. I only use an exernal flash under 3 conditions: 1) when I need to bounce the light either for a softer look or because I'm fotographing my infant (please never fotograh infants or very small children directly pointing a built-in flash at them); 2) when using a wide angle lens. In this case the built in flash can leave a shadow in the bottom of the image. Finally 3) if you need to shoot fast at longer distances, it refreshes faster than the built in flash (but only with new batteries, if this feature is important to you, consider spending the extra $30-40 for the Nikon SB-400).Summary: an inexpensive flash, and definitely an alternative to the Nikon SB-400 unless you need a fast recycling rate (Nikon's refreshes much faster). If you are taking a vertical shot and need to bounce the light, a small mirror taped to the side of the flash or a piece of white paper taped like a hood over the top (but not covering the light) works like a great diffuser box.

Affordable Alternative to OverPriced SB-400
Great affordable i-TTL flash. The i-TTL gives correct exposures automatically by communicating with the camera. Photos look incredible when bounced off the ceiling. Much cheaper than an sb-400 and does practically the same thing.Sometimes I'd like it to recycle faster when photographing people on the fly, and it'd be great if flash makers would make Right and Left swivel standard, so you can bounce off the ceiling in portrait or vertical shots, but not even the sb-400 does that. You can still just bounce it off a wall when the camera is vertical, and the results are pretty great too. A major improvement over the on-camera flash.Mine is branded "Quantaray by Sunpack XLF-50"
