Beautiful book, condition not so great
Book itself is beautiful but came with corners of pages all bent up. No surprise. Done buying physical books off Amazon unless I canโt find them elsewhere.

It's pretty good.
It's pretty good, but it doesn't have my favorite story in it, so I'm pretty disappointed.

Fantastic collection of stories, beautiful photos by John Bauer, TOP QUALITY
My grandfather used to have a small library about trolls, tomtes, and other such creatures. He was an old Swede who passed away at age 99 1/2 who loved to tell us grandchildren stories. Some of the same tales and also many photos from John Bauer are in this collection. I bought 2 books (hardcover version) for my daughter and my nephews as Christmas gifts. Before I wrapped them up I locked myself away in the room to read and look at the photos. I can't express how happy I am with this book. It brings back so many memories of my grandfather. This type of story telling is lost in our modern day children's books.I have read 4 of the stories to my daughter so far. She loves them and asks to see the photos for several minutes at a time before we turn the pages. The hardcover is very sturdy, nice binding, gorgeous colors and clarity in the photos. The print and pages are large enough to read at a slight distance if you are sitting with your child or trying to show them the pictures as you read. Brilliant!

Fabulous Book. I May Need More Copies.
This was a gift to an adult son, who has a penchant for good storytelling and yes, he has Scandinavian roots. He read a tale the moment he opened this gift. The Treasury is a collection of stories in an imaginative writing style that reminds me of the Book House Books our family had when I was a child. The illustrations are wonderful, as are the quirky descriptions of characters in the stories. Time passing is handled in an elusive way in the tales. Jump into this book, and you may find that time you spend absorbed in these pages also becomes irrelevant.

Wonderful book, great illustrations!
This was a gift for my son who loves myths, legends, and fantasy artwork as well. This book was perfect. He keeps it in his backpack so he can look through it anytime.

Lovely book but some colours are a little dull
The stories are lovely and John Bauerโs pictures are breathtaking. Together they are magical. It is a nicely bound chunky book so the pictures are a good size. I have seen a lot of John Bauerโs work and I have the tarot cards that have been made from his art. Compared to those the colours in some of the pictures are rather muddy. Not all of them which is rather odd. Perhaps the others I have seen have been colorised and these are the original almost monochrome in some cases. See pics. The first golden key picture is from the internet, the other is this book. Still very atmospheric, Earthy and metaphysical. Great for children and anyone with a sense of wonder and imagination. A wonderful gift. To myself!

Wonderful stories, marvellous pictures!
The stories are not ones that you'll know, but they are funny, and moving, and often mysterious. Some of them come from folktales - but not directly - and some of them have a bit of morality, but not too much. And the pictures by John Bauer, who died young and tragically with his wife and child in a ferry accident, conjure up a world of magic that is only just up the track from the cabin in the woods. All these stories, and their authors, should be much better known than they are!As a storyteller in various story-clubs I am always on the look-out for fresh material - and this book is just the job!

A Fabulous book that arrived within a couple of days of ordering! I must admit I ordered it as much for myself as for my children to enjoy! Found entirely by chance (a link to Brian Froud stuff I'd been looking at) - I can't believe I had never before heard of the illustrator John Bauer. His work is amazing in style and colour choices - I cannot imagine anyone drawing anything more apt for these wonderful stories of trolls, royalty, adventure and dark forests. The stories made me immediately look for Jim Henson's series The Storyteller. If you admire the work of any of the aforementioned names, or just enjoy a good old-fashioned faerie tale and quirky, almost eerie, but fantastically detailed and atmospheric illustration, then this book is a MUST for your collection!

Beautiful quality book
This is gorgeous! Beautiful quality book, very well made and substantial. The illustrations are stunning. And we've enjoyed every story. Quirky and unusual.if you like proper fairy tales and folk tales you'll enjoy this. Each story is just the right length for a proper bedtime reading. My only complaint is that there aren't any others to buy!

I've been reading folk tales for many years, both the adult versions and those aimed at children. I expected at least some of the tales in this book to be familiar - many themes are common across the world, and Sweden isn't that far from the UK. But most of the tales were quite new to me. The style, translations, illustrations - the whole presentation - are absolutely first-rate. If I had to choose one book for reading to an eight-year old girl (as in my case), this would be it.
