I wanted to paint my transmission purple b/c it is the same color as ATS Diesel's Transmissions & the Mrs. favorite color (but we all know the real deal) LOL. I couldn't get it at Advanced Auto Parts, I was forced to go online. desertcart had the best price but still about $3 more per can then at Advanced. When I found purple paint, Amazaon offered the primer and clear as well. I honestly had no clue about the primer spray and clear coat. I read a helpful review that the CLEAR COAT will form a SMOOTH surface over the paint. Smooth means less abrasive and the engine grime and dirt can't be in-bedded. The Cleared Part will be easy to maintain over the years keep my hard work clean! So I choose to do 3 stages desertcart recommended Primer. Paint, Clear. I still prepped (wire brush, de-grease, & power wash) the transmission before I lay first coat of primer (ended do three coats). I did as the directions on the can said to for all three stages of the paint phase. I WILL BE HONEST: When I first laid the clear I was upset, it seemed to dull the gloss purple paint that was finished drying. After it drying for 24 hours, the shine came back. Not glossy as originally it was, but the POP effect was there. The first thing I did was run my CLEAN hands over the cleared transmission & it was smooth as a virgin's bottom. I was very pleased & tempted to strip my block and re-do it in the 3 stages. I will leave the block and transmission as is see how they compare over a year and chime back in! I've used it on my brake calipers and it works great. Depending on how much you drive you may have to touch it up to keep it bright every so often but that's going to happen regardless of what paint you use because brake dust, etc. I use this because its high temperature. **Q: Is it OK to use a gray primer and then use a hot pink paint over top of the gray** A: Primer of any kind will be good for a nice finish for whatever you are painting. I recommend 3 light coats of primer lightly sanded in between. When getting ready to apply you engine paint, beware, this is thick paint. It has heavy particulate matter which is the paint. I recommend that you turn the paint can upside down for 3 to 4 hours. This paint settles heavily. After several hours upside down, shake violently to get it mixed well. After that don't spray too close to your target surface. Do not spray at any temp less than 72 degrees fahrenheit, and spray evenly side to side about 5 to 6 inches, from surface. **Q: Has anyone had luck with the VHT clear coat enamel? Does it last and resist chemicals?** A: Hey Josh, Pretty much like any other Clear Coat. It does work. Should re spray a couple of coats. It will last for awhile,depending how it's used!!
