### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I am very impressed

I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. I don't know all the ins and outs of music production and sound. I can't tell you about lows, mids and highs. But I do love listening to music, and I have a modest sound system in my office with that allows me to enjoy it. I had purchased a Topping DX3Pro+ about a year and a half ago or so and I also purchased some Sennheiser HD 660 S along with it. I like the headphones, but they don't quite have the kick in the bass department that I like. I have tried using an equalizer to increase the bass output, but due to the setup of my PC and how I put it to sleep, that method inconsistent. So I convinced myself I didn't need the bass in my headphones and I would just use my floorstanding speakers with 12" woofer to listen to music that I want to enjoy some bass (my kids "love" when they are trying to play PS5 in the same room /s).Enter the HIFIMAN Edition XS headphones. After reading more about planar magnetic headphones and knowing that they can reproduce more bass than my Sennheiser's, I was ready to pull the trigger at the $270 price point to give them a shot. And boy am I happy I did. The amount of bass in these headphones is considerable compared to the 660s and it is perfect for my listening preferences. It's not too overbearing that it muddles the sound, but it's just right for what I like. Even on my 12" sub, I have it set around the mid point, maybe slightly less, as I don't enjoy overbearing bass. These are perfect for me, and I enjoy the open back style more than closed back. Less warm on the ears and kind of opens up the soundstage a little bit. In some tracks you feel like the sound might be several feet away, it's quite remarkable. Some songs just sound different in these in that respect and I like it. The music kind of feels like it's around you, not right in your ear hole. I do not have any issue driving these headphones with my DX3Pro+, the volume is quite sufficient at around -20db on the readout with the boosted gain. I have gone louder closer to 0db, but this is higher than I would normally run them so I didn't really listen for distortion at this level or check to see if my DX3Pro+ would crash due to the load. So far I haven't had any issues whatsoever with this DAC and headphone combo working together and I am really happy with the sound quality.The overall size of the headband is quite large. I do have a slightly bigger head, but not gigantic. I adjusted the headband one click from the smallest for my head size. I could see some individuals with a smaller head having issues wearing these comfortably and still have the headband rest on top of their head. If you have a smaller head, you might want to try finding these somewhere to try on before purchasing or knowing that you might have to return them if they are too large.I do want to highlight two issues I have had the headphones, but not issues that I would dock a star for. The first issue is as others have pointed out in other reviews, the cord that comes with the headphone is quite short. I can't lean very far away from my desk without risking pulling my DAC off the desk. Would have been nice to have a longer cable. The second issue is that they are quite heavy compared to other headphones I use, and there's something about the headband that after about a half hour of listening, my head starts to hurt where the headband rests. I have to adjust slightly to relieve the pressure. I have noticed the longer I use these headphones that this becomes less and less of a problem, but I didn't have this issue with the Sennheiser or the Audio Technicas that I have. It's to the point now, though, where I don't notice it and I was listening for several hours recently and when I was finished, I didn't even notice it, so this issue may go away as you get used to the weight.I have seen some reviews on here where people say if you move, you will hear plastic cracks and creaks if you move your head with these headphones on. I don't really notice this myself. Sometimes I wear glasses when using headphones, and they are plastic themselves, so I notice they will creak with any headphone I am wearing, so I might be desensitized to it. I was wearing contacts recently while wearing the headphones and tried moving my head around to see if I could get them to make noicse, and they did a little bit, but not so much that I would say I was annoyed or would notice during normal use when I wasn't actively trying to focus on it.I have also seen some review about the build quality. I feel like the build quality is sufficient for the price I paid, and I'm not throwing my headphones around or dropping them frequently, so I think they will last for a long time with how I treat them. There is nothing about them that makes me feel like they aren't worth the price point I paid.The foam stand that comes with the boxes insert is a little gimmicky, but I'm actually using it as my headphone stand already has my Sennheisers and my Audio Technicas hanging from it, so I do have a place to put them for now, but I won't use it long term. The foam is quite stiff and if not careful, I worry it will cause wear on the headband. I haven't noticed any yet, just a long term concern I have, and I will probably be purchasing a new headphone stand soon.Overall, as you can see from my rating, I am really happy with this purchase. The planar magnetic speakers in these really give a sound that I find quite appealing with great bass for my listening preferences. And at this price point, I have no regrets about buying these headphones whatsoever. These will be my daily drivers for headphone music listening from now on.

Why did you pick this product vs others?:After 1.5 years of fairly constant use. Wanted to be accurate in my review based on my perspective and hearing. 1. Note, that I have not purchased higher price headphones. Currently, at least right now I have no need to.2. My experience my not be yours and my music listening may differ from yours. Plus our ears and how our brain translates what the ears are receiving likely is different.3. This review is after 1.5 years of use. Spanning two different DACs and three headphone AMPs.I would not define myself as an audiophile. I rather think of myself as a music enthusiast. I can sit in front of my computer doing various tasks (googling, budgeting, playing a game) and listen to music at low to moderate levels mostly. Then there are times where I will listen to just the music critically or just relaxing and have a beer or two. Point? Its about the music.I really do like these headphones, and think they are one of the best bang for bucks out there. But there are some caveats to getting the most out of them.For my use, these are for listing to music from my laptop via computer UBS to DAC, then to Headphone amplifier.For this model, I would recommend a external DAC with built in AMP or separate units. These planners I believe are 18ohms, so not hard to drive, but planners still can be power hungry, and sound better with the appropriate amount of power. Your computer mini out is not going to give these headphones justice.For software on my Laptop I have used Roon, Jriver, and Musicbee, Foobar.I have and extensive FLAC library and mostly listen to ROCK, Grunge, Alternative, with some hip-hop, modern country, and maybe movie scores mixed in.1. Out of the box I would say they need about 100hours break-in. Don't get me wrong, they still sound great out of the box, but better after a good break-in period.2. Some complain about fit for smaller heads, I guess mine is medium sized. Just simply bend to the headband gently to tighten to earcup grip. This works for me. However, I suppose this headphone can't work for everyone.3. So far i have not had any issues with the build quality. I mean it could be better, but no complaints here for me. You put them on, listen to music, put them down. Look elsewhere if your on a treadmill or doing tasks that require heavy movement.4. Sound is decent after break in, using separate DAC and AMP but there are tips and tricks to improve.Tip1: Using a music player that supports convolution filters for this specific headphones and downloading these settings in the software for use with this headphone really help get close to the Harmon curve. You can set a regular bar EQ for this if your player does not support convolution filters, most free platers don't support convolution filters, but with research and little trail a error, some like Foobar, Muscibee and maybe others it is possible to add a convolution filter to the player. Jriver is paid for, but not bad price and sounds great. Roon is out of most peoples price point for a player, but has a fantastic interface with all the bells a whistles you would need built in.Tip2: Having support for a parametric EQ which can be used after the convolution filter to personalize to your ears to your preference.Trick1: The bars going across the outside of the ear cups vibrate. "Just, flick it with fingernail, when you have the headphone on your head". You will hear ringing. These bars will vibrate at certain volume levels and effect sound at moderate volumes. I found it necessary to tie string (any thin string will work), down the center, around each bar. Just slight tautness, we are not trying to bend the bars, just keep them from vibrating. You will notice clearer sonics after words at moderate and maybe even lower volumes.Trick2: After Tip1 through Trick1 completed, now is the time to listen to your music for a good while. Then, after you have a good feel for the sound, typically I would use two or three fingers in on both earcup and cover various areas of the outside of the earcups while listing to music. Just lightly touch keeping hand straight out. I would focus on the upper right, upper left, and maybe bottom of the ear cup. You will notice a difference. I can't speak for everyone, but I noticed improvement when placing two or three fingers covering the rear upper section. I read a forum where one person preferred the other side upper front area. Once I determined that covering up the upper-rear section with my fingertips sounded better, I simply used string and rapped in that area. Note: I have a pic that you can see that done. We are not trying to totally isolate the area just providing about the same blockage as your fingers provided.This headphone has been really fantastic for me. Moving up to a higher "more expensive" probably would sound a small portion better. But if I spent $600 to $1000, would I get 45% better? No I think not. Just be aware there is diminishing returns on moving up to more expensive headphones. From My perspective I am guessing $1000 headphone would be better (At beast 10 or 12%). However, I am note willing to move on that as a see no reason to.My highs are great, mids are clear and tonality is great, you will understand what the singer is saying, plenty of bass on these phones, I tend to increase 2db on Parametric EQ without effecting clarity. Even plenty of bass on Rap song when I play them as breakup songs in my rock playlist.To me, best headphone for the price, as mentioned above with headphone AMP and the music player that supports convolution filters so you can load convolution filter for this specific headphone, Then try the Tricks to elevate to your specific hearing experience.Good luck.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Crazy good sound quality, with minor QC quirks

I'll start off by saying the sound quality beats anything I've heard in a long time- I was big into headphones in the 2010's, starting with IEMs and moving up to all different ranges of Grados, Sennheisers, Beyers, etc. Somewhere in between I lost interest, but when I saw these on sale at a great price, I said what the heck. And I've gotta say, planar sound has come a long way and pretty much beats everything I've ever heard. Senn HD700, Stax 007, Grado GR1/2, all excel in certain areas, but the Edition XS are 9/10 in ALL areas of sound. Punchy bass, gorgeous mids, and sparkling treble come standard before you even start to EQ (I don't bother, they sound great out of the box with no enhancements.) Don't fret about claims you need a great amp for these- I have a 30 yr old Yamaha integrated and an iBasso D2+, neither struggles with these headphones. But the quality control claims about HiFiMan are definitely true- nudging either of the 2.5mm connectors at the cups, even slightly, would cause channels to cut out. And lately, after ~8months of use, the left channel will occasionally crackle. I don't mind any of this as long as the drivers remain in good health, but it does give me pause about the durability of these headphones. As far as appearance and fitment, I'll say they're nice looking 'phones with fine mesh filters protecting the drivers, and I have had zero issues adjusting them to my rather large head- I have several clicks of adjustment left after getting them to sit perfectly. If you plan to use them with equipment any further than your computer desk, I'd recommend a longer cord length- a 6ft or 10ft cord would allow a lot more flexibility, whether at home or on the go. Overall, I can say wholeheartedly that planar technology has taken leaps and bounds over the years and if you're looking for a great first pair of headphones, or to see what improvements have happened since the golden age of dynamic drivers, these should be at the top of your list.
