Bully Tools 5-Tine Broadfork, Fiberglass Handles, 56" 10-Gauge Steel Fork

This tool works perfect for me. I have a bad back and can not doing any lifting. I use my weight to put it deep in the ground, then pull back to loosen the ground. The tool is well made. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Also my order arrived several days early. The ground I am using the product on is very hard. It goes into the ground easy. I would recommend this product to anyone who does not have the strength to dig in the ground with a traditional shovel.

I was unaware this tool even existed until I saw it used on a YouTube video. After reading all the reviews I decided to give it a try. It was shipped promptly and arrived ahead of the projected delivery date. First of all, it's not a mini-bulldozer and it's not unbreakable. Using enough force against relatively immovable objects (roots and boulders), the handles can be broken as well as the tines being separated from the bar, and even the bar broken as pictures have shown. The solution to this is simple. If you encounter significant resistance,... stop. Use another tool. Dig up the obstacle. Pry it out with a more appropriate tool. If a root, cut it with a saw or axe. I'm using mine to clear a patch of ground for a garden. It does a remarkable job of loosening soil to the depth of the tines. The only other tool that will do this to this depth that I'm familiar with is a bottom plow pulled behind a farm tractor. The advantage of this tool over a bottom plow is that it doesn't create a hard "pan" that bottom plows can create. I suspect that mechanical tilling with gang tillers or rototillers can create a pan at their maximum depth. The "pan" I'm referring to is a hard layer of soil that can be created by soil compaction from using heavy tools repeatedly at a given depth, which interferes with water percolating below that depth. This has helped me clear patches of lariope, weeds, grass, vine roots and tree seedlings. Good ancillary tools are a turning fork, a potato fork, a broad rake and sharp transplanting shovels (to cut roots). On the down side for this particular product, I've found it difficult to keep the handles from working loose. This may not detract from the tool's function, but it does cause unnecessary movement and effort by the user,... and, frankly, it's irritating. Trying to tighten the handle bolts can cause concern about actually over-torquing the bolts and shearing them. Yes, this can happen. I've had it occur on 1/2 inch bolts on a tractor. I've ordered washers to shim the bolts. Hopefully, this will solve this problem. If it does work, these should be included with this broadfork by the manufacturer. In summary, this is a great tool. I wish I had heard about it years ago. I now consider it an indispensable tool for the home gardener. This particular brand might benefit from one small change; but, functionally, it seems to be perfect for its intended purpose. I love mine!! (And it doesn't kill earthworms!)

This broadfork is way better than tilling—fast, effective, and easy to use once you get the hang of it. Once you're in motion, it moves about 10 feet a minute, making quick work of the soil. Definitely money well spent. That said, the bolts securing the handles to the fork tend to shimmy loose, even when fully tightened. This creates a slight wobble that doesn’t impact performance much once you’re used to it, but it does raise concerns about long-term durability. Because of this, I’m giving it 4 instead of 5 stars. I plan to weld the connection soon for extra stability. I'm not sure how the manufacturer could improve this, but one possible solution is a clamp system like the ones used on razor scooters—something with a groove to secure the handle more tightly. Tighter tolerances in the nut holes or an additional bolt higher up on the handle could also help. Still, this tool is well worth the price. A tiller would cost much more to rent or buy, disrupt the soil structure, and wouldn’t penetrate as deeply. I did turn over the grass with a shovel first, and since my soil is sandy, the process felt pretty easy.

This was the best thing I've ever bought! I couldn't even use the tiller without using this first. Our ground is solid clay. Our tiller did end up messing up and I had more to so I used this to loosen the soil deeply and the garden weasel pro to remove grass and break up the top for planting. The only issue i have with it is I cannot get the handles to tighten all the way, but it is still pretty solid. I'll just show a picture of my garden that was prepped with it.

I was skeptical about these maybe being some kind of YouTube fad that you see on gardening channels, but I decided to buy one when my tiller wouldn't start this year. So glad I did. I have a lot of rocks, stumps, tree roots etc all over my yard. Hitting them with the power tiller is not fun but with this thing I can just kind of work around them. I have 5 plots around my yard maybe 100sf each. While a little tedious, its good for that. Loosen it up with this and finish it off with an old fashioned garden hoe. I think it's better with dealing with partially frozen soil then my tiller was. And I've used it to loosen the soil around a few small stumps before digging them out. This has all kinds of handy uses. The only thing I can complain about is the handles aren't exactly stiff. They kind of wobble around in the frame a little. I feel like it could be fixed with some washers but I don't really care about it enough to try.

We love it! It's exactly what we needed to deeply break up our clay to start a new garden. It works significantly better than the little tiller we have that would have only gotten 2" or so deep. I went searching for an alternative to the tiller and found the broadfork. There are many types on the market and several made in America, like this one is. It was important to me that it be domestically made, yet I didn't see why it had to cost over $200 like the others. We have the newer design with the reinforced tines. We are in our late 40's and go slowly and carefully so we don't wear ourselves out. Also, we know there are loaf-sized rocks in our clay. When we hear a tine hit it, we reposition the tine and use the fork to lift out the rocks. We have not bent a tine or the tool at all. It's very tough and does it's job better than anything else. Be careful and reasonable with yourself and the tool and you'll soon have your garden prepped for planting. I'm glad I took the effort to scroll to the most recent reviews that are positive. I wish Amazon would rank them as the most important ones because they review the improved tool, not the version from several years ago.

Bought in 2019, have used every year since. Often leave it outside all year, my bad, I'm a chaotic gardener. Works amazing and love this thing! Has stood up really well to my abuse.

Lowest priced broadfork I've seen. Surprised by the sturdiness of the tines. Narrow long plates that are large do what a "grelinette" (invented by Mr Grelin in France) is supposed to do: aerate the soil deeply without disturbing the fauna in the horizontal strates extremely well with not much effort. It took less than half the time it usually takes me to do my entire garden. I agree with another comment: a bit wobbly where the handles meet the u-bar. Could be better conceived. Not enough to lose a star. I also did a parcel that was a bit more packed. It went well. The handles and tines are sturdy. A broadfork should never be used to remove a tree stump or to aerate or turn clay soil. It appears sturdy enough however but you could hurt yourself or damage the tool. You have packed clay soil? Plant winter rye in the fall and don't bother to cut it. Use the broadfork to aerate. It will unroot the rye and the extra long roots will have already done part of the work for you while the now dead rye will compost in a few weeks and give you a rich loamy soil: just add some sand and you'll have the perfect soil for your veggies etc. Happy gardening! I bought this after a local farmer suggested one for our 70x40 rural garden. I cannot keep up with the weeds anymore. I bought one late winter and put it together excitedly. Later I attended a few workshops that heavily promote no till and decided not to use it. I messaged the company and asked if I was able to return it, unused. The company promptly emailed back and issued a full refund, telling me to keep the broad fork and try it. Well, I tried it yesterday in a bed where I will be planting carrots (prior to mulching and implementing no-till). I was so shocked and surprised at how easy it was. My husband stopped what he was doing to watch me pull up weeds/roots 1.5- 2 ft in length, full root intact. How satisfying!!! It made one of the worst parts of gardening enjoyable. Heavy duty and sharp, making it easy to use (I'm 5'4" so manageable for women). What a great product! I didn't want to come inside for supper.
