What makes Red feel so special (shifting, braking, ergonomics, etc) carries directly into the Rival line. There are only two lines of distinction -- weight and finish. In terms of weight, the Red crankset is so feathery because the arms and spider are both built from carbon fiber. The Rival is made from hollow forged aluminum, causing it to weigh in at about 100g more than the Red. Further, this second-generation Rival has a black finish, making it visually distinct from the carbon weave of the Red crank.Beyond these variances of weight and aesthetics, the two cranksets are indistinguishable. You may notice some cross chaining if you run the small ring at too hard of an angle relative to the cassette, but most of it can be dialed out. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ CX Bike *by B***. on Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2013* Also, let me add, this is English threaded, just in case someone needs that info.I use this on my commuter/cyclocross bike, I abuse that bike, it works well in mud/gravel/rain/snow, any other conditions I haven't tested it yet. I like the 50 for normal roads/street and the 34 for cyclocross. It looks really durable and even though its been put trough rough terrain with rocks etc, it doesn't scratch easily.
