The Tempest...
The Hurricane and Spitfire fighters have gotten most of the ink for their exploits as World War II fighter aircraft for the R.A.F. The Tempest, the last of a long line of piston-engine fighters, gets some overdue attention with this book from the Osprey Combat Aircraft Series. Author Chris Thomas did his own illustrations for this very thorough summary of the Tempest in action. The Tempest was the follow-on to the Typhoon fighter-bomber, although its production had more than the usual teething pains. The Mark V version was fielded first, based on the availability of the proper engine, and only replaced later by the Mark II. As the author explains, the Tempest was fast and maneuverable, competitive against any fielded German fighter, even the new jet versions. It made its initial mark chasing down V1 drone bombs over England, before graduating to combat air patrols over NW Europe. Its final postwar missions were in South Asia and Malaya. The author has assembled the story of the Tempest, from start to finish, with lots of technical details and an almost daily account of combat actions, including tactics. The period photographs and modern illustrations give a good sense of the aircraft. The narrative tells the story of the men who flew it. Highly recommended to enthusiasts on World War II aircraft.

Good read
Very interesting book, especially when you read the Typhoon book as well. Two completely different aircraft yet somewhat similar. It had a very long career

50/50 coverage with post war Tempests
Usual osprey publication, bit more on post war Tempests than I would have liked - but for other readers that maybe exactly what they were looking for.
