A good quick read.
I read Gillian Hick's Vet On The Loose recently, a book just as engaging as anything by James Herriot. I happily picked up this author's sequel, Vet Among The Pigeons, hoping for an equally enthralling reading experience. This second book offers some great tales as it continues Dr. Hick's story, including the addition of two charming daughters to her family. However, for some reason, this sequel didn't capture my heart to the same degree as her first book. Perhaps I am tired of reading about the eccentric, sometimes even abusive animal owners. So few of Dr. Hick's clients seem appreciative of her efforts. When it comes to the care of their animals, many of her clients exhibit ignorance, lack of concern, and the inability--or outright refusal--to pay for veterinary care. It gets old, reading these same themes over and over. I admire Dr. Hick and her dedication to animal welfare. She seems like an outstanding veterinarian. I am glad I read this book. Now I think I need a break from more tales about humans who can't or won't take good care of their pets and livestock. There were a significant number of typos in this Kindle edition. I don't know if these errors are present in the printed book or not, but clearly, the proof reading could have been better. I gave Vet Among The Pigeons four stars because of the typos and because of its ending--or rather, the lack of an ending, a summary, a conclusion, anything that would have wrapped up the reading experience in a satisfying manner. One minute I was reading yet another tale of veterinary animal care. Then the stories abruptly stopped. It was an awkward termination for an otherwise decently constructed book.

A worthy sequel, but too short.
I like Gillian Hick. Her 21st century semi-urban Irish practice is a far cry from James Herriot! And she does a good job of keeping the reader entertained with her adventures.I do have 2 complaints about this book. First, it's too short. Second, it simply ends with no warning, which is somewhat wrenching if you care about Hick and her practice. It feels like the first 2/3 of a book, hence my 4 star review.

will LOVE these books and be clamoring for more as soon ...
I want more from this author!!!!! Delightful stories of being a woman vet in Ireland! Gillian Hick will have you laughing out loud, teary with sympathy, and scratching your head in bewilderment with her true tales of the trials and tribulations of being a modern day vet in what can sometimes be an "old farmer's world." Any animal lover and indeed, any James Herriot fan, will LOVE these books and be clamoring for more as soon as the last page is turned. Enjoy!!

If you love animals, this is the one for you
An interesting story about an Irish female vet & her efforts to be seen as a vet, not a woman playing with animals. ( Not just pigeons )!

Entertaining and honest
I really enjoyed Gillian's first book and I was hoping this one would live up to its predecessor. Happy to say I wasn't at all disappointed. Not only is the writing entertaining and accessible, but it is also a very balanced and honest account of a vet's working life. It must have been very tempting to write only about the success stories - the cases that go exactly to plan and give the impression that the author is some kind of wonder-vet. But Gillian consistently writes with humility and modesty, and the book is all the richer for her willingness to acknowledge those times when she felt out of her professional depth and in need of help and guidance from more experienced colleagues. It's another great read - I just hope the author has another in the pipeline.

Very enjoyable! I've read a few kindle vet books now; this one and the first one "Vet on the loose" rate at two of the best. Both books give a realistic insight into the life of a vet without getting too bogged down with detail. There is the right amount of drama, humour and bleak aspects to make them both really good reads. I would love to read a third book if there is one in the offing...

great tales for animal lovers and with a sense of humour
I love Gillian Hick's books which make me smile. Each story is charming and a story in itself so you can read a chapter at a time and enjoy piecemeal. Good for holiday reading as it is light and refreshing if you love animals and their owners.
