It really does engrave.
This thing exceeded my expectations. At first it felt cheap and I didn't know how it's supposed to work. I inserted the battery and depressed the button. And this is how it works: The steel needle you see actually vibrates. The motor in the blue casing powers the vibration. It sounds like a dental drill. And it vibrates enough that it chips off microscopic pieces from whatever you want to engrave. To my surprise it actually works. One can easily engrave their initials. However, don't expect to engrave Michaelangelo's mural. Well if you can, please post a pic and I will forever view you in high esteem. Happy engraving.

Neat little gadget you don't think you need, but will really enjoy!
Bought this as an impulse buy thinking we could use it for some random art project in the future. Had no idea how much my husband would enjoy it from the MOMENT it was opened. LOL. He's a big kid at heart, and as soon as he saw what was in my shipment he took it out, found some batteries and went around the house seeing what all he could etch into random places. Seriously. Notebooks. A coffee mug. Our daughters coloring book. A magnet. EVERYTHING. I almost regret buying the thing because I am afraid he may try a tattoo. LOL. It has worked well on every surface he has tried so far. As for the coffee mug, he had to go over it twice to get the same etch depth as in plastic. To be expected from hard ceramic though. It does take AA batteries, so make sure you have some on hand. It doesn't burn, no flame or anything. So pretty safe as long as you don't push it to skin. I removed the batteries after he used as there doesn't seem to be any type of "safety" on it or anything. We do have 3 kids, so I didn't want them etching each other!

This is kind of awkward to work with. I tried etching my initials on acrylic blocks that I use for my rubber stamps and it didn't turn out very well. It doesn't really etch that deeply.
