If the alternator does have an independent negative wire (instead of grounding to the engine directly) then you could put the shunt in series with this negative wire. Do not wire the shunt from the engine itself (i.e. a grounding stud) to the negative post of the battery. If done this way, the heavy starting current (when cranking the engine) would flow through the shunt and that would be a big problem. Stick with wiring the shunt in series with the alternator's positive output wire. **Q: This doesn't come with any instructions. how do i hook it up? how do i attach the shunt?** A: Well I will tell you how I hooked mine up. PositIve from battery to one side of shunt it does not matter what side and the other side goes to my inverter. Now the two screws on the shunt and the two studs on the back of the meter you need to have two smaller wires of equal lengths and hook up the meter to the shunt. Before you hook up the two little wires zero out your meter that little screw on front of meter turn it slow so the needle points to zero. Now hook up your two small wires. If you hook up wires wrong your needle will go backwards, just reverse them so the needle points to zero. Now my amp meter shows me how many amps I am pulling from my batteries- mike- fridge-exc.
