Not a book on fundamentals.
I have never written an online review for a product ever, though we make daily purchases on Amazon for our home and businesses. For this item I could not help myself.I bought this book to learn how to play chess since my grandson is interested. It is entitled "Chess Fundamentals." It is about nothing of the sort! The first page and chapter are about end moves or "mates." It does not start with board setup, principles, moves, strategies, etc. It is entirely worthless. If you have a bird that is interested in chess, then you can use the pages of this book to line his/her cage.

Excellent book by Capa
Chess Fundamental's by Capablanca is very instructive and easy to read and also it's in the algebraic edition. You can't go wrong with this book, written by one of the greatest chess player of all time. Great for learning and improving your game. Great book.

Excellent book
I know of no clearer explanations of chess fundamentals than that provided in this small book by this World Champion.

A classic
Only few words we know about Capablanca himself of his conception of the game. This book is an absolute classic. Like the books of Lasker and others of their time, they are best to get their view of the game than to learn how to play.I have been investigating the thinking methods of the old champions and this little book introduce the concept of the calculation by visualizing future positions. Capa doesn't expose details about it, but his writing help us to get the concept: visualize the goal position in mind and then try to construct it at the board. That method was repeated in Lasker's Manual writing about positional and combinatory players. In our days this conception is regained by Silman and Beim as new concepts and without proper credits to the old guys.As any classic, get this book!

Great study book
Great book for studying mating patterns. You will find simple patterns like King vs King and Queen but also more difficult wins like King vs King Knight and Bishop. Plus, it's Capablanca's own work, what's not to like about advice from one of the greatest ever?

Good choice
I am beginner to intermediate level. Great book for me! Capablanca explains every move. I learned simple things I thought I knew, but in fact I never got completely. Making much less mistakes now and improved my play in very short time, because I start winning endgames against slightly better players where I never knew what to do before! There is an edited version available where only part of the text is Capablanca's original, but I don't know that one. This here is the original, only the notation is edited to algebraic, and I can really recommend this book!

Good Classic book to Start your chess with.
This book will surely add 100 rating points if you are stuck somewhere around 1400-1500 which I was for long long time....gives advice on all the important theoretical endings and little bit on the positional aspect, but I think any one wanna start his Amatuer chess career should first read this book for sure in complete and read it again....also Road to Chess Mastery is on the similar lines by Walter Browne and Max Euwe. There are lot of mistakes and openings arent so great and funny thing is to start with his 14 annotated games (u shud sit with a board for these games) he gives us 5 starting games in which he loses, that is nice of him but not so inspiring for the author you are going to follow, I think he wrote this book too early, maybe after his WC match with Alekhine, this book would have been a great classic not just a good book... anyways, Capablanca gives you the tricks how to get advantage and like many other greats emphasizes more on endgames ! All in all good book to have to kickstart your chess career.

Just a heads up that it uses descriptive notation - ...
Just a heads up that it uses descriptive notation - so anyone used to algebraic notation (a1:h8) may find it confusing.

Classic
A fantastic classic chess volume. Slim, quick read. Not a modern tome by any standard, but still a fantastic classic piece, worth the read for a novice player.

Classic modern chess tutor
The books a great read on all the fundamentals of chess especially end game which is in fact now considered paramount in learning. A generalization is that any book by a great name is well worth it. It's laid out well. A small grumble is that diagrams could have the a-h & 1-8 co ordinates along the edges.Yes, it's in the brilliant Algebraic and now world wide notation. The above 'A customer' review otherwise says all u need to know. If u think the books only up to intermediate level perhaps think again as most slips discussed are from grandmasters etc!Top quality printed and a nice practical size. It won't take you months to get thro'. If you absorb it all, your playing level will go up considerably.
