Halo 2: Vol. 2

Moving and Atmospheric
Having all three Halo soundtracks (the first one and volumes one and two for the second) I can safely say that this is the pick of the three.I liked the original soundtrack for the first Halo because it had full-length versions of all the tracks. Halo 2: Vol 1 had a great selection of music from the game, with some great band track thrown in there too (Incubus' Odyssey and Breaking Benjamin's Blow Me Away come to mind).I personally prefer the musical score though, which is why I love Vol 2 so much. It's all score, conveniently 'suited' together for maximum listening pleasure. While I prefer being able to listen to the themes in their entirety ala the original Halo soundtrack, the music found here is above and beyond anything heard in the first game, with huge thematic swells and mournfully moving interludes. Horror cues are smattered throughout (best heard in the score from the Flood segments of the game) as well as some experimental electronica. All in all, Vol 2 is an epic, cinematic musical feast. Highly recommended.

Vol 2 the Best yet!
I now own all three Halo albums, and I have to say that this is the best yet. I found it to be more true to the game than the previous volume. I found the score to be fantasic and brilliant. Marty O'Donnell is a amazing composer who has brought a life and emotion to the games threw his music. I am proud to own all of his work, but this album is by far his greatest work. I loved every minute and second of this album. I reccomend this album to the Halo fans and to anyone who hasn't played the games. Favorite tracks: 6 Unforgotten and 12 Epilogue. To all those who read this review God bless and check out the games if you haven't already.

Halo 2 OST Vol.2
Halo 2, Vol.2 was my 5th Halo soundtrack purchase after Reach, ODST, Halo 3 and Halo 2-Vol.1. I managed to collect them in 'reverse' order. The original music in Halo 2,v1 was good ... some of the tracks even great, but the 'rock/metal' stuff I could have done without (maybe it's my age). However, Halo 2,v2 was ALL original music and all of it was good. All the Halo soundtracks are a "listening experience". I was pretty much hooked on the Halo soundtrack series by the time I purchased this album so I am biased. I am almost fanatical about the latest albums (Halo: ODST and Halo: Reach). Music, by it's nature is a very subjective experience. I find this music inspirational and basically have adopted the Halo soundtrack series as my "soundtrack of life" music. I find the music fits so many moods, or perhaps it creates moods, I'm not sure just yet. I have no formal music training so I'm at a bit of a loss to articulate my review in musical terms . . . I just know I like most of the tunes, and I like the 'sound' of the music. OK, some of it is just background 'noise' from the game, but the bulk of it is REAL music and a mix of Rock, Jazz, New Age, Celtic, Classical. I still don't understand how O'Donnel/Salvatori were able to mix/blend all these styles into meaningful beats, melodies, arrangements and sounds that can evoke so much evocative emotion on my part. If you like that blend constructed and expressed in a disciplined manner I think you'll like most of the music, even if you don't play the games. I would have been drawn to these soundtracks even if I never heard of the games. My favorite tracks and their 'sub-segments' are the ones that border on being 'classical' sounding ... epic,thematic,haunting,ominous-sounding. I think there is a 'sound' here for almost everyone. The music just got better and better with each release. I really hope they do the soundtrack for Halo 4. I can say this for sure: you can't really judge each track my the little 30 second previews. The music morphs and changes within the composition, as though you are getting 2 or more pieces of music within each track, but their is continuity remains intact. (Disclaimer: The general statements in this review do not apply to "Halo Wars". Halo Wars is done by a different composer and while it may be as good or better, I can safely say it does not have the same 'sound').

Beautiful, rich, intense
I recently reviewed the Halo 2 vol 1 soundtrack, and I have the same feelings about this disk. Halo music isn't just for Halo game fans; it's for anyone who loves rich, intense movie or game soundtracks. The songs vary quite a bit in valence and volume, I usually take the loudest couple out and leave the rest. The music evokes images of steampunk dystopia, sci fi and action movies, sometimes in-your-face exciting, sometimes thoughtful and brooding. I couldn't do without the music.People who find that negatively toned musics affect them, or people who struggle with depression, may find this music affects them too intensely.

What the Halo 2 soundtrack should have been
While I did enjoy the first Halo 2 soundtrack (particularly the Mjolnir Mix of the Halo theme), it lacked most of the major themes from the game. However, this version is almost a scene for scene musical representation of the whole game, and it is perfect. While playing the CD I can picture going through the certain levels and everything that happened in each, right down to the dialog. I only wished they released this one first (with the Mjolnir mixed added, of course) and then release the second one as a follow up album.

Still good today!
Excellent background music - much more smooth song-to-song than the Vol 1. I think this one is the actual game music.

The Best

Great Mixture
Listening to both music from the game and songs inspired by known bands & singers by the game is a great mixture of music play the game to or just to have playing while hanging out around the house.
