Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na: Instructors Manual for All Martial Art Styles

Pictures are strong lacking.
I am about halfway through this book. The writer wants to make sure you know how knowledgeable he is. May martial arts writers bear down on this for legitimacy. This is important, but it is also the tactics of con-men. I'm not saying at this author is a con-man.The book does push you to get buy the related video material. I can only hope that camera angles showing grips and angles of application are better than the writing and pictures in this book displays. There is good time put into explaining the muscle groups, bone connections, and related tendons. As I stated, it is often unclear what is being locked and by what manipulation is exactly which direction. The pictures make sure that the opponent is grimacing in pain to show how effective the techniques are. Too me that's unneeded showmanship.I have been hesitant to get a book by this author due to the width of his work across various martial arts, but I wanted to pick-up something on chin na as I have had very little exposure to it other than those applications that can be found in other martial arts. The author appears to be very respected in the martial arts world. I've seen his name and articles on him in various martial arts magazines and run into video of him in the past (either he himself talking/performing martial arts or other talking about his works/displays of martial arts).I simply expected more from the work than what I'm reading/seeing, so, to me, adequate but not impressive.

Seize and Control
Chin Na means "seize and control" and is part of most Chinese martial arts. Many of the hidden techniques in the Taiji forms are actually Chin NA techniques. There is a DVD companion to the book "Analysis of Shaolin Chin NA".If you are reading the book, you should also get the DVD so that you can see demonstrations of each technique.which are shown in 1)slow motion 2)close up and 3)normal speed. Each technique in the DVD references the book numberings. The video demonstration is great when you are reading the book since the techniques need to be seen and experienced to be understood. You probably should watch the DVD with a remote control in one hand and the book in the other hand. The DVD demonstrates the techniques. The book describes why and how the techniques work. The book also describes escapes and counters which are not covered in the DVD.The book is divided into:1. Fundamental Training -- exercises to develop the hand strength and speed needed to effectively apply Chin Na techniques.2. Finger Chin NA.3. Wrist Chin NA.4. Elbow Chin NA.5. Shoulder, Neck and Waist Chin Na.6. Neck Chin NA.9. Muscle Grabbing Chin NA.10. Cavity Press11. Using Chin NA in a fight.12. Treatment of Injuries.

Really the ultimate guidebook for the invaluable art of chin na
Nothing beats getting to study Chin Na with Dr Yang himself, or one of his top Instructors like Jim Noble, but this book methodically breaks down the movements and mechanics of the various types of chin na in a way that is easily accessible to any serious student of martial arts. No matter which style you practice, joint locks and submission holds can be easily incorporated, and I would argue could make the difference if you are ever involved in a real conflict. Where these skills are often not taught, it may be up to you to seek them out and this is a great introduction. If you're going to start practicing Chin Na, my only advice, and please heed it: be soft and take it easy. I'm serious, this stuff is the real deal and highly effective. If you use too much force you will cause real and lasting injuries. Also highly recommended are Dr. Yang's complementary Chin Na DVDs, for example Advanced Practical Chin Na In Depth: YMAA Seminar Series where you can see the fluid nature of these moves in action.

I found this book to be a great book with extensive compilation of many techniques found in the various martial arts i did. For me i have difficulty remembering all the locks and take down techniques and find this book to be a master piece of information. This book made my martial arts classes more simple by organizing the techniques and by flipping through technique by technique you come to grasp the simplicity that all techniques work against the body!

"Analysis" is a great book...
The "Analysis of Shoalin Chin Na" is a great book. The author takes you throguh the beginning, starting with stretching and exercises to make the most of your chin na training. He goes through a complete chin na regime, beginning with the fingers, wrists, elbows and shoulder joints. The information taught in this volume, if studied intimately, can give the thoughtful martial artist enough insight and information to take what he learns about joints, to enable him to apply that knowledge in almost any situation. This is a fine instructional manual, written and explained in a very credible manner. I highly recommend it for any serious martial artist.

Great source for self defense
I have taken a few self defense classes and this book contains some familiar moves. It was helpful to have the photos so well done to show each move as it progresses, and the instructions were very well written. There was actually more in the book than I anticipated, like how to treat injuries, the pressure points on the body and how to use them both to defend yourself and to relieve pain. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for easy to learn, practical instruction on self defense.

Very Useful Explanations
This book contains both interesting and pragmatic information on the application of Chin Na techniques. It's very well written and very readable containing clear descriptions of how to apply the techniques. Seize and control techniques are described for application to the following areas: fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulder, neck, waist, and legs. The book also covers muscle grabbing and cavity press techniques. It's written in such a way as to be able to understand the techniques and then incorporate them into your own system.
