The Making of Chicana/o Studies: In the Trenches of Academe (Latinidad: Transnational Cultures in the United States)

Excellent Choice for Chicano Studies Course
The book details the Chicano Movement in the United and shows the way that different groups intersected. As a Mexican-American, I did not know a lot about the Chicano Movement and it is a shame that it does not get the same support and recognition as the Civil Rights Movement. It really showed the harsh realities that Mexicans and other Latino groups faced and the struggles they went through. However, not everything is flowers and rainbows and they continue to face discrimination in modern times. However, the Chicano studies programs at universities have offered an insight on what younger generations can do and ways to move forward.Excellent author that provides great analysis of Chicano Movements. This is the 3rd book I read from the author.

A Very Good Book
This book covers the emergence of the Chicano Studies Program that came out of the Chicano Movement. I utilized this book in my semester long paper writing on the fall of the Mexican American Studies Program in Arizona. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in Mexican American Studies or even for those history students who would like a different view of the Civil Rights Movement as it pertained to other ethnicities that were not African American.

Have just started reading this book. I am familiar with the history of the Mexican American having read many authors while in college but this is a different perspective. I teach Spanish and always include some unit on Mexican American history, contributions, culture and this work will be extremely helpful.

An Important and Riveting History of Chicana/o Studies
Rodolfo F. Acuña's historical analysis of how Chicana/o Studies came into being is not a dry read even though it is the story of how academia was forced to change and accept this discipline. Rather, Acuña puts into context all the personalities, politics, cultural upheavals, and battles needed to create Chicana/o Studies departments across the country. He also dispels the misconceptions that are often raised--even today as seen in Arizona--to attack Chicana/o Studies as a form of anti-American indoctrination program that will turn our young people into dogmatic, hate-filled radicals. In truth, as Acuña explains, Chicana/o Studies departments have helped young people succeed and join in the American dream. This book is necessary reading for those on either side of the debate.
