The inner material hasn't broken down even in high heat areas. However, the outer material is some type of cloth; I don't know that it's fire-retardant. **Q: Does this work with diesel?** A: Yes, this will absorb diesel. **Q: Would this be okay to use on the surface of the water of a swimming pool to remove body and suntan oils?** A: I don’t don’t know as I haven’t not tried it. It catches oil and fluid nicely when working on a car.
