Impressive out of the box.
This is an excellent dagger and sheath design. I suspect this will be the swan song for SOG daggers, as long as GSM owns SOG. Fortunately, the Pentagon FX and FX Covert models were designed prior to GSM, and I'm glad I picked one up, since I missed out on the original Seki Pentagon's in SOG's heyday. The pentagon covert feels great in the hand with jimping in all the right places for a secure saber or icepick grip. The handle is small and not really intended for a hammer grip. The hilt is very minimal and slightly rounded, just enough to ramp your thumb against and hold your index finger secure, without being too wide or squared to catch on clothing or gear. Almost as smooth as a hiltless design. When held in a saber grip the jimping on the pommel also locks securely into the bone of your palm for thrusting motions. The same jimping on the pommel makes a secure backstop for your thumb in the ice pick grip. The sheath is equally well thought out with death grip retention and has several carry options; the pocket clip works well and holds securely to whatever you attach it to, the clip can also be removed and re-attached across the lashing holes near the hilt for scout style. You can also remove the clip for a slimmer sheath and use the lash holes with paracord to secure to your boot, ankle or use as a neck knife. You can even use Velcro tape on the smooth back of the sheath (clip removed) and attach directly to your plate carrier or any other gear with Velcro. One reviewer mentioned popping out the tabs on the inside of the sheath... DO NOT DO THIS. Those tabs pressure fit over the ends of the hilt and hold the dagger securely. Sheathing the dagger requires some force and produces an audible click when those tabs lock in place over the hilt. I suspect people are not doing this properly, hence the bad reviews regarding the sheath retention. I EDC the pentagon attached to the shoulder strap of my maxpedition sitka pack, pommel down, utilizing the stock UMS belt clip with no retention issues at all. Lastly, the only minor con that I can find is that the edges are not very sharp out of the box, as pointed out by other reviewers. The edge is serviceable and can be improved with honing, however, slicing tasks are not for dagger style blades. The design utilizes maximum tip strength for penetration tasks, and a little edge sharpness is sacrificed due to blade geometry. Out of the box, the point is sharp and well-formed for its intended use.

SOG Pentagon FX Covert
I wanted to submit this review to clear up issues people are having with the sheath. First of all, the Pentagon FX Covert is smaller in size than the Pentagon FX Professional. The Pentagon FX Covert is perfect for its purpose, it is a small and concealable last-effort knife. It was designed to fit in its sheath securely, and it does. As reviewer Arakeen stated, 'Sheathing the dagger requires some force and produces an audible click when those tabs lock in place over the hilt'. The sheath has cut-out tabs designed to tension lock the blade in place. These photos show the knife improperly and properly sheathed, and close-ups of the tension cut-out tabs.

Don't Buy. So Disappointing in So Many Ways
The sheath is utterly atrocious. 1) The sheath is so ridiculously tight that it's nearly impossible to push the knife in or pull the knife out without tremendous force. Despite the marketing, the sheath's retention / tightness is not adjustable - that's only true of the larger model but not this one. 2) The belt / boot clip falls off of the sheath. The screws used to secure it are narrower than the belt clip's holes, meaning the clip can just slip over the screws and fall off of the sheath entirely (which it did). Imagine that happening in a life-or-death moment. You're dead. 3) The clip is terrible. It's really hard to put onto a belt and just as hard to take off of a belt. It can't be canted or angled for appendix or centerline carry. It's wide enough for a 1.75" belt meaning it's too loose on a standard 1.5" belt for horizontal, along-the-belt, or scout carry. 4) The sheath has aesthetic problems. Its color is mismatched with the knife handle's. The sheath is so tight that it rubs away the blade's black coating, making me question the quality and durability of the knife's finish. A poor finish means the knife will rust, especially in humid environments. And you should expect better aesthetics at this price point. Solution: Send this knife to Armatus Carry to get a great custom sheath. But that'll probably cost you an additional $50-ish on top of the $130-$200 you already spent on this knife. The knife itself is ok, though it could be sharper. The finger guard should be slightly wider (and / or the finger choils narrower) to prevent your hand from slipping onto the blade during during a thrust... which is specifically what this knife is designed for: thrusting. Overall, this is an absolute ripoff of a knife for this price point. For $50 you might be able to ignore the issues. For $100+ you wouldn't buy this. For nearly $200 MSRP you know SOG is out of its mind. So what should you do? If you have too much money and need to get rid of it, buy this knife and then buy an additional Armatus Carry custom kydex sheath to go with it. That'll probably fix most of its issues, but at a steep price. If you actually value your money, consider the Cold Steel Counter Tac II, Hide Out, or Mini Leatherneck Double Edge Spear Point instead. They're all similar designs under $35 with better (but not perfect) sheathes.

Sheath Sucks!
The blade itself is amazing! Top notch from SOG.. however the sheath completely sucks! The blade will not stay securely fastened! Lot of tweaking and personal adjustments must be made !

A good little back-up knife
Absolutely an awesome little fixed blade. Sheath holds well and the belt clip although a little thin in my opinion also works well.

Small and Durable
Feels nice and durable. Grip is a little slim which is perfect because I need a smaller knife and it fits in small areas. Blade is not that sharp but it can always be sharpened.

Actually Smaller than I Imagined
I've recently purchased both the Pentagon FX and the Pentagon FX Covert. My initial thinking was that this was a medium size knife, whoever it is smaller than my initial thinking. Overall both are great products from SOG however I highly recommend the regular size if you are going to spend the money. This is a great EDC very comfortable and balanced.

The sheath is crazy loose right out of the box
The blade is a bit smaller than expected but still fits a large hand okay. Very sharp on both edges. The small sheath thet comes with it is horribly loose. I will have to find something else thst SOG may have or get a custom sheath made. EDIT: There are 2 little tab just inside the sheath on either side. Using a small screwdriver, I popped those two little nubs out and the knife now fits nice and snug. My void the warranty on the sheath but at least its a snug fit now.

Ein Messer mit der gewohnten guten Qualität von SOG. Die Verarbeitung, Material ist aus meiner Meinung sehr gut und der Kauf des Artikels hat sich gelohnt/bewährt.

Over-priced for poor quality assurance and sub-threshold blade sharpness
As others have noted, think twice before purchasing this blade. It does have a great design, shape, size, and heft. However, it is as dull as a butter knife from the package and the sheath takes considerable work to get it to engage and release the blade in any kind of smooth manner - probably dulling the blade even more. I think they clearly have a huge quality assurance issue at SOG, and for the price they are charging for this knife, we should be getting a better product.
