Fill a pod is a bit tedious due to the small opening provided on the pod
I just recently purchase two of these to replace a similar product that lasted 10 years. So far I can only comment on the ballast portion of the product. The unit comes with four "pod" containers to add weight to the stand should the umbrella not be attached to a deck or patio using fasteners. The information states that at least 120 lbs. of weight is required for these umbrellas. I filled the pods with The Home Depot's "play Sand" which is one of the heavier sands available to the average consumer. Fill a pod is a bit tedious due to the small opening provided on the pod. I used a hand garden spade - about 30 minutes a pod to fill it up. They do provide a funnel, but most sand is not completely dry and will not pour directly into the small opening with ease. After filling the pods, they weighed about 32 lbs. each, for a total weight of 128 lbs.. When I placed the umbrella at the fully horizontal position, it was barely at equilibrium with the ballast, certainly not safe enough with any small breeze. I added water to each pod which brought the weight up to 38 lbs. each or 152 lbs. total. It is better, but not safe enough in my opinion. I will be adding at least another 50 lbs. of sandbags and see how that works. I will mention that the previous umbrella used a round base that had one large cover over the ballast. The inside of the base had pie wedge shaped compartments - easy to fill and the total weight filled with sand was 200 lbs. We never had an issue with tipping. In the end I think this umbrella needs the pods to be at least 1/2 again as thick to hold enough ballast.
