Worthwhile Reference Book Analyzing Higher End Art Gallery Market
Good content with case studies, statistics, & advice from successful gallerists. It is very informative & but not a step by step manual to starting any old gallery, as some other reviewers may have thought. It details realities of art businesses that I think most artists would find surprising & most current gallerists probably won't. It specifically focuses on contemporary fine art, not small-town giftshop-type galleries. I like to read about contemporary art market tiers & politics to inform my own career decisions as a fine artist & aspiring curator, & this was one of the more interesting books I've found on the subject. I also recommend reading Talking Prices: Symbolic Meanings of Prices on the Market for Contemporary Art by Olav Velthuis.

It is very bad out there
Right now the running joke in the art world is that galleries are the NEW starving artists. It is very bad out there. Technologies such as the Instagram, online galleries, screens, on demand printing, a gone-gone middle class, and free access to any thing digital has made the art gallery an expensive alternative. Some flashes of brilliances but overall not realistically workable. His central premise is that you invest in three spaces such a "garage gallery" in a low rent area, (Note: there are no low rent spaces anywhere save for the desert or plains), a primary gallery and then a special place where you discuss prices and deals for those artists that have arrived into the big time. How do pay for all this... A 70% cut for the gallery, a 30% for the artist, and lots of fanfare to flatter your clients when you get a sale. But guess what? It still won't pay for your three spaces.Next the gallerist is to treat their artists like minor league ball players whereas they start out producing art for you and you see if they can sell... If so they move up into the pros, (The gallery) and then into the "Hall of Fame" space. (Read as Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, et al.) which quite frankly is maybe .0025% of all the artists who have/had gallery representation so far.I have "street cred," I am signed artist. My work has appeared in Chelsea, New York; The pacific Design Center in L.A, and I was in the "Art Palm Springs" art fair this year. This reads like a "Tony Robbins" book written in a way that the author appears to know all the answers and finally one must ask, why isn't he running a gallery?

Pink printing? This book is not easy on the eyes!
I might give this book higher reviews if I could read it easier. Nearly half of the book is printed in neon pink! Bad choice as it is very hard on the eyes.
