Mattel Games Othello Game

What can be said about Othello? Perhaps one of the greatest strategy games out there? I loved playing this as a kid and I am hoping our son will also like to play. Being the last child we have living at home trying to find games he would enjoy but not require 3 or more people to play and/or have fun, Othello seems to be a perfect fit. While he can play this one with his friends over the weekends and such, he can also play with my wife or I. Another game I like for the simple fact it is about more then just rolling the dice or selecting a card and then moving the piece around the board. It requires you to not only think about the next move but like Chess you need to be thinking about the next 2-3 moves and how each will affect the board in play. Our 10 year old loves Chess so I am hoping this will be another game he finds to be fun.

Othello is a classic game that truly is simple to learn - but takes awhile to master. I bought this one as a gift for my father. The playing disks are slippier than my older version of this game that's why I docked one star. They have a tendency to slip out of your hand while playing. Otherwise, this is a wonderfully engaging two person game for a variety of ages.

First the good: the game is the same as always, one of the best ever created. And unlike at least one edition, the slots actually hold 32 chips each, which makes storage better especially if you don't want to fool with keeping the box. The covers are a nice touch. But the board isn't strong enough; it actually sags just from the little pressing it gets as you flip pieces over in the middle. The raised lines between spaces seem like a good idea, but they get in the way more than they help. And the covers feel like they'll fall off any moment. Rather than buy this, I'd recommend finding a used one in good condition from the 80s. Nice, solid board, and personally I prefer the flatter chips from that period as well.

The game itself is "okay" for construction (plastic on plastic), but you really don't need toughness unless you are that kind of guy. Moreover, if you have not played Othello, order this today. It can played at a primary level with young children yet they can be made to feel that they are in the game even if you, as a practiced master of Othello, can ultimately win the game. As skills grow, the game takes on complexity that can keep adults engaged to play for a long time. So, the item itself is modest, but the game is superb, if you can tear yourself away from the game controller for a few moments.

My 10 year old son just got into this. I had a really old set from the 70's that was a green felt board that is showing its age. Plus, there were no physical grid lines so the pieces slid all over the place. This game's form factor solves all my problems! Pieces don't slide out of location due to the ridges when you flip them constantly. The cost in new condition was like 50 bucks, so I got a used version for 10. Awesome value! The plastic piece holder shells don't work that great. Not worth losing a star over. I just naturally kick butt in this game without even thinking about it... so it gets bonus points from me. :)

I used to love this game when I was a child. I still enjoy playing it and have enjoyed teaching my children to play. I miss the old design that folds and has storage for the pieces. This is quite large and takes up a lot of unnecessary space

After playing an older version of this game at my inlaws, I decided to purchase one for our family. We love the game, but one part of the board frustrates me - the game piece covers don't stay on securely. This does not affect play at all, but kind of drives my OCD self crazy when I put the game up - I want it to close more securely. Not a big deal since I keep the game in the box, but I can see how the pieces would end up everywhere if the game was not stored in the box.

Othello is a classic. Unfortunately, unlike the classic boards I remember from when I was a kid, this one is particularly nasty - feels (and looks) cheap and flimsy - the board flexes when you pick up pieces - the pieces are small and smooth enough that if you keep your nails really short, happy days flipping the pieces over :-( Love the game - hate the product itself. Wasn't exactly cheap - and for the price I expected better quality.

Our familiy absolutely loves this game. playing as a pair or as teams the game has it all, thoroughly recommended!!

Arrived in no time, and my entire family has become addicted to playing. The tag line of the game is 'a minute to learn, a lifetime to master'. I'm almost certain my girlfriend is only with me because we play it all the time (she is addicted) and she doesn't have her own board.
