An Early Literacy Book for Educators
"Striking a Balance: A comprehensive Approach to Early Literacy" is very "comprehensive" indeed. It is a thick book of 457 pages and so it requires a good amount of time to read through, take notes and digest. The textbook gives in-depth details to help children read. The book covers theories on reading aquistion. You will also find systems covered such as the: grapho-phonological, syntatic, semantic, pragmatic systems and more. The textbook covers how students may aquire sight vocabulary and looks at how a teacher can use a holistic approach. Teachers will be advised as to how to use drama and theater to help develop fluency. Assement data is included. Be prepared to read, study and digest! The book is thick and heavy to carry around but helpful. One may be able to find it online?

Informative and easy to read
My husband bought this as a required text for his CA teaching credential. I needed to do some research for a 4-skills series I was planning for a publishing company and my husband recommended this book. It was very informative about how children learn to read and how to develop literacy in younger learners. It gave me the background knowledge I needed for the reading skill aspect of my series: what works and what to be aware of. Would recommend it to anyone interested in developing literacy in children.
