'This CD is called Warriors because this is how I look at these great men,' writes trumpeter and band leader Weiss in the liner notes. 'They came up at a time when this music was at it's most vital and exciting and was part of something epic and historic yet they are still going strong, playing with the same freedom, passion and intensity that is what encompasses this great music. ' Jazz veterans, colleagues and kindred spirits Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, George Cables, Cecil McBee and Billy Hart forge a world-class union on their auspicious debut for Jazz Legacy Productions. Along with trumpeter David Weiss saxophonist Craig Handy, they are collectively known as The Cookers.

Oh Yeah
To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect from this group of mostly veteran musicians. Let me assure you, this album swings and swings hard. All the tunes except one by Freddie Hubbard were written by group members. All the tunes are excellent and when I heard Billy Harper's Capra Black, it took me right back to Lee Morgan's Last Album. If you like straight up hard bop you should check this out.

The Cookers really Cook!
Having recently seen this group of mostly octogenarian jazz artist I had to purchase this album. These are some of the most accomplished jazz artist on the planet. The album is a must have for any jazz lover. Leadership of the group is shared among everyone. David Weiss coordinates the groups efforts and productions. Jazz legend Billy Harper stands out as does legends Billy Hart, Cecil McBee, George Cables and Eddie Henderson.

Veterans still smoke
Here are five kindred souls who have been smoking for enough years individually to all be considered veteran smokers. 'Smoke' here means hard driving post-bop played with precision and power. This is a very good set and everyone contributes admirably. All of the music is very accessable..not the least bit self-indulgent. Old fans like me already know that that these creative musicians are all great soloists who are especially comfortable with this kind of music. But there is a bonus. This album shows is that as a collective, this group is also comfortable with each other. They sound like much more than a rehersal group. The use of two trumpet players, both separately and together, just adds to the pot. These guys really 'cook'.All this cookin' is bound to produce a lot of smokin' and it does so here.Buy the album. You will like it. It will probably become a treasured componet of your jazz collection.

Worthwhile CD
I had never heard of the 'Cookers' before, but after hearing this CD, I'm totally hooked! This is what jazz should sound like! Every cut is well executed, and delivered. These guys really 'cook'! I'm sold on their ability to serve up a dish at anytime in my home. Keep on cooking!

Yeh!! The Cookers Turn it up!!
This is a great set by a band of legends!! These guys can really play, and compose wonderful music. For me, the thing that most distinguishes this sort of soul jazz, in the hard-bop tradition, from more contemporary jazz is that each tune has a tune - like, solid hooks for the killer solos to hang from... And, Billy Harper on sax, David Weiss, Eddie Hendo on trumpet, Craig Handy.. alto and flute, and George Cables on keys, ... not to mention Cecil McBee on bass and Billy Hart on traps, all deliver!! A lot of the avante-gard jazz these days is great, but, I do like a tune with very classy improvised soloing, a solid vamp and a tune! Highly recommended.

Best band in the land.
I couldn't believe it when I heard that my two favorite saxophonists (Billy Harper & Craig Handy) were playing in the same group. The recording is amazing because everyone is an all star and they play just like that. Great tunes, tight execution and inspired solos. You will be blown away when you hear Priestess by Billy Harper. The arrangement is awesome and the solos scary. Buy it . 5 stars.
