For Skyping, Google Hangouts, or other videoconferencing, on a desktop or an older laptop that has separate headphone and mic jacks, THIS is the thing you need. It takes your cell phone headset or earbuds with a single 3.5mm 4-conductor (TRRS) plug, and splits it into separate headphone and mic plugs. Don't spend a lot of money, just buy this item, it's perfectly fine, and you get 2 adapters for the price of 1. It's nice that they include 1 black and 1 white adapter, so you can be color coordinated, or purposely mismatch them so you can see the little fella and not rip it out of the jacks accidentally. Why you can't get these things locally at Target or wherever, I have no idea.
