Q: Have you successfully started a fire with these lenses and/or do they have a decent focal point with light to potentially start said fire?

I actually have successfully started a fire with one of the cards. The focal point can get pretty small and intense. I lit a tinder bundle first made of some dry grass and a cotton ball with Vaseline. It was a bright and sunny day so it only took a minute or so to get the bundle lit.

Q: How are these packaged?

Each Opticlens lens comes in it's own reusable plastic sleeve for protection from dirt and scratches. The 12 lenses are then package in a resealable ziplock style plastic pouch for storage and protection.

Q: What is the actual overall size, and what is the size of the lens portion? What is the focal point dimension? What material are they made out of?

2 3/16" x 3 3/8" is the actual overall size, 1 11/16" x 3 1/8" is the lens portion. I don't know what you mean by focal point dimension, I believe they are made out of some sort of plastic.

Q: do you have to hold the magnifier above the object you are reading?

Yes, you do need to hold it above the object at least a few inches. If you lay it flat on the page, the image will be clear but will not magnify. The magnification will increase as you raise it further form the page until it reaches it's maximum magnification of 3X normal size (300%). This is about 6 to 10 inches form the object. If you raise it further, the image will become blurry.
