This kit replaces the factory original Build Plate with a thinner acrylic base plate that allows mounting of a novel, smooth surfaced, patent pending foam interface (1 sheet included). The smooth interface allows the underside of the part to have a smooth surface finish, identical to what the 'sanded' factory version produces and smoother than with the 'blue tape' option. The main benefit is for printing delicate parts that easily break when removed from the original build plate due to the PLA material adhering strongly. Large, thin walled parts are easily printed and removed, even without removing the build plate from the machine. The foamed material allows the PLA material to nicely flow (provided the plate is leveled correctly) and does not suffer issues seen with 'non-stick' surfaces. The resilient foam surface will withstand repeated builds but can be replaced in situations where, for example, the user does not home the machine after leveling the surface and then accidentally preheats the nozzle whilst touching the foam which can lead to a small amount of plastic tearing a small hole in the center. A single foam surface can be used for dozens to hundreds of large builds. Care needs to be taken that the nozzle is set correctly so that warping is minimized. Both the base acrylic plate as well as the foam with adhesive backing come cut to size to fit the Makerbot Replicator 2 and is a simple drop-in replacement without any modifications to the machine required. The build plate simply needs to be leveled prior to the first build.
