The wire crate "slots" into these as they protrude vertically and prevent any laterial movement in the crate with acceleration, braking, curves, etc. A single bungee to keep crate from bouncing up and off is only thing needed. Only complaint is that the paint is easily scratched off allowing them to rust. This is a minor inconvenience, but really pretty critical when installing on the cross bars.
