When I saw this and remembered I had a few old laptop drives laying around I thought I would give it a try. It works great, only took a minute to put in a old drive and now I have a portable drive with spending that much. Comes with the cord to connect to a laptop or desk computer and is fast and never had a problem with it. Review: Great external HDD enclosure, but... - This is a great enclosure. It looks nice and it's easy to install the drive. Once that's done it's ready to go, and it works very well. The activity light is a plus, as well. My only real complaint is that there is nothing with which to hold the drive tightly into the connector at the end. With other enclosures I've tried there has been a small, firm piece of foam at the end opposite the drive connection. This keeps the drive "pushed" snugly into the connector at the other end. Then, of course, you can use the foam that comes with the kit to keep the drive from moving up and down within the case. I used the thick piece, and I attached it to the top face of the drive itself. I had to use a credit card to hold the foam down as I was sliding the cover back on so that the cover clip didn't catch and tear the foam, but it worked well, and the drive is snugly in place. I worry a little about heat, but it should be fine. For the issue I mentioned, I used a piece of foam weatherstripping, cut to size. The sticky side to the plastic of the case, of course, and it holds the drive firmly forward and into the connector. The space is about 1/8", which is enough that the drive would wiggle out of the connector, and this firm foam will keep it from doing so. Overall, this is a very good enclosure, and to be able to turn an unused drive into a usable one for such a small price is very nice. I would definitely recommend this case to others, with the added caveat to be careful about the 1/8' space at the end of the drive. ## Features - Portable Data Storage: ORICO SATA drive enclosure supports most 2.5 inch 7mm/9.5mm SATA SSD and HDD up to 6TB (Max). You can easily connect the old drive to transfer files to PC, laptop, router, PS4 or as a USB external hard drive - Ultra-fast USB 3.0 & UASP: This 2.5 SSD enclosure has a USB 3.0 interface, which can reach a data transmission rate of 5Gbps, 20% faster than USB 2.0. If both your drive and output device support UASP, it will increase the transfer speed by 20% compared to ordinary USB3.0 - Easy to Use: Tool-free installation. The internal SSD can be easily removed in about 3 seconds. Just slide the cover off, insert the drive, and slide the cover up to use. Hot-swappable. You can check the working status through the LED indicator - Wide Compatibility: The 2.5 inch enclosure support Windows 2000/Windows 98/XP/Vista/ 7/8/10, Lunix, Mac OS 9.1/10.8.4 and above. No need to install a drive, plug & play. Ideal for booting up old hdd/ssd and recovering important files of broken PC - Friendly Design: This external enclosure is made of high-quality ABS plastic, compact size (4.9x3x0.5in), easy to carry. Brushed surface design prevents fingerprints. The build-in shockproof sponge pad can well protect your hard drive and precious data ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B01M08LCXW | | Best Sellers Rank | #360 in Enclosures | | Brand | ORICO | | Color | Black | | Compatible Devices | Desktop PC, Laptop, Smartphone, Tablet | | Connectivity Technology | USB | | Customer Reviews | 4.6 out of 5 stars 8,460 Reviews | | Data Transfer Rate | 5 gigabits_per_second | | Enclosure Material | Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) | | Hard Disk Form Factor | 2.5 inches | | Hardware Interface | Micro USB 3.0 Type B, USB 3.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1 | | Hardware Platform | Windows | | Item Dimensions L x W x H | 4.92"L x 3.15"W x 0.55"H | | Item Weight | 90 g | | Manufacturer | SHENZHEN ORICO TECHNOLOGIES CO.,LTD | | Material | Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) | | Memory Storage Capacity | 6 TB | | Mfr Part Number | FBA_ORICO 2189U3-BK-US | | Model Number | FBA_ORICO 2189U3-BK-US | | Number of Items | 1 | | Product Dimensions | 4.92"L x 3.15"W x 0.55"H | | Supported Devices Quantity | 1 | | UPC | 655779704859 714874073519 712073948195 | | Unit Count | 1 Count | | Warranty Description | 18 Months Manufacturer | ## Product Details - **Brand:** ORICO - **Color:** Black - **Hardware Interface:** Micro USB 3.0 Type B, USB 3.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1 - **Hardware Platform:** Windows - **Product Dimensions:** 4.92"L x 3.15"W x 0.55"H ## Images ![ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5 Inch 7mm-9.5mm SATA HDD/SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported],Black(2189U3) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81TBy8NceML.jpg) ![ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5 Inch 7mm-9.5mm SATA HDD/SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported],Black(2189U3) - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71qx3DbS7QL.jpg) ![ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5 Inch 7mm-9.5mm SATA HDD/SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported],Black(2189U3) - Image 3](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71OcgVEPoYL.jpg) ![ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5 Inch 7mm-9.5mm SATA HDD/SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported],Black(2189U3) - Image 4](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/713oEwX8MYL.jpg) ![ORICO USB 3.0 to SATA III 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure for 2.5 Inch 7mm-9.5mm SATA HDD/SSD Tool Free [UASP Supported],Black(2189U3) - Image 5](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71NzokYBonL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Model** options. ## Questions & Answers **Q: Can anyone solve the controller question once and for all? jmicron or norelsys? company says jmicron, people say norelsys** A: 11/09/2019: Just got two of these. macOS System shows it as a VIA VL711 (USB 3 to SATA III Bridge Controller) with Toshiba firmware. Possibly same board Toshiba uses in their USB drives? VIA Specs: https://www.via-labs.com/product_show.php?id=44 **Q: What is the enclosure made from? Is it plastic, or metal?** A: It's made from plastic but it feels awesome! 8/10 for the build quality would be perfect if it was aluminum but i guess heat transfer was a concern hence plastic **Q: Is it compatible with USB2.0?** A: While it is true that USB 2.0 and 3.0 are compatible, older hardware might not provide enough power to the USB ports, preventing the drive from working. Some USB 2.0 enclosures have two heads on the computer end for this reason. **Q: Why only 4tb? it's a hard drive enclosure why would it be limited by capacit?** A: I'm going to over-simplify this but basically even though drives themselves have their own controllers, the USB-to-SATA chip has its own interface controller too for sorting data in and out of the drive; they aren't just a "dumb converter" like how a VGA to DVI display adapter works. The USB controller is limited in what it can "understand" and they just don't have enough processing power to track more data. Older interfaces used to be limited to just , so these are getting better! ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Simple, easy to install hdd and works great!!! *by T***R on October 14, 2026* I was looking for a portable hard drive to keep pictures on while traveling.
