From director Paul Feig, GHOSTBUSTERS makes its long-awaited return starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon & Leslie Jones. Review: You will hate this movie IF that is exactly what you want - I saw the original on TV only a few years ago when I was already in my late teens so for me, Ghostbusters was nota magical part of my childhood that would have me spitting fire at any attempt of a remake. In fact, the only thing I remember about the original movie was the theme song and catch phrase "Who ya gonna call!?" This could possibly be due to the fact that I was watching it while studying for an AP Calculus exam and wasn't actually paying attention...but man is that theme song catchy and addicting!? I went to see the 2016 movie in theaters out of my love for the actresses themselves and because the trailer looked awesome! I ended up LOVING this movie so much and couldn't understand why people were hating on it...BEFORE it was even released. In fact most people that claim to my face that the movie was awful had not even seen the movie themselves and were just saying things like "everybody said it was awful." I recommend everyone go see this movie for yourself instead of listening to what others have to say but do so with an open mind. If you watch this movie already preparing for it to be bad, and even wishing it will be bad just so you can prove your point, you will already have yourself in a negative mindset and WILL end up finding this movie just as bad as you wanted it to be because that is what our minds do. My advice: just take the movie for what it is. It is nothing like the original, but that is not a bad thing because if it was exactly like the original....what would be the point in watching it? It is a comedy starring four hilarious actresses (with resumes as proof) about the paranormal that can also bring back happy nostalgia from the original version with its tributes and cameos (yes, most of the original cast APPROVED of and had GUEST appearances in this movie) but only if you let it, because nothing can make you happy if you are looking for reasons for it to make you angry. Review: The extended edition is actually better! - My husband and I saw the movie over the summer, and when my younger brother and sister (middle school age) were over we bought rented the digital edition to watch with them since that was all that was available. Usually I don't like deleted scenes or extended cuts since I feel like they were taken out for a reason. But Ghostbusters felt improved by the scenes that were taken out. The kids absolutely loved it, more than the original film that they'd seen already. I happen to agree, this is such a fun popcorn movie with a stunning cast, great jokes, and even a few scares. I hope they make a second one of these! So what's different in the extended cut? Scenes not only ran a bit longer, but they gave Kristen Wiig's character a lot more to do--dealing with a sort of boyfriend from her old job, another guy who tries to film her on his phone while saying he went to her home town--that fit in very nicely and fleshed out the story. There were a lot more jokes and dancing added in that were great, too. The only downside is that they use some alternate lines for throwaway jokes, like the thing about the Aldridge mansion's owner building a fence to keep out the Irish and the salty parabola part that I thought were funnier in the theatrical cut. There's also more cursing so heads up if you're showing it to smaller kids. But that was so minor, and what they added back in was overall great.

Awesome Reboot!
I don't know what people mean when they say that this movie doesn't have a plot. Is it that it doesn't have the same plot as the original movie? Because it doesn't, and thank god for that. The original was awesome! But this isn't a remake, it's a reboot, with its own original characters and story. I think many people went into the movie expecting it to be the original, except with four women instead of four men. And, let's face it, it wouldn't have worked if they'd done that. Hell, it wouldn't have worked if they'd done the movie with four men and tried to rehash the original. You have to play to your cast's strengths when making a film, no matter what it is, and that's exactly what the people behind the new Ghostbusters did. To summarize the plot (which is very alive - again, despite reviews to the contrary) Abby Yates decides to re-publish a book that was written by herself and a colleague (Erin Gilbert) years ago. When Erin finds it, she confronts Abby, who has teamed up with an engineer (Jillian Holtzmann) to create weapons to fight the paranormal. At the same time, a guy named Rowan (who has acquired the book) is plotting to use the books theories to break the barrier between the ghost world and the physical world and bring about a new apocalypse. One of his devices is found by Patty Tolan, a historian, who adds her incredible knowledge of the city to the team. Thus, the Ghostbusters are born. They are not an instant success. They have to overcome doubt by the general population, as well as a governmental coverup that threatens to shut them down before they've even really begun. They also have to face everyday annoyances, such as the fact that rent at an actually base of operations is too much for a fledgling operation to afford. But they persist. Without them, the world would be doomed. I love that the casting director didn't hire the most physically able women possible. I feel like I can identify with the characters, and I love them. Instead of doing outlandish stunts, they four main characters perform feats they are physically capable of doing. It gets a little hokey at times, but that's just Ghostbusters for you. It's cute, it's awesome, and it's compelling. I was a fan before this, but I didn't truly love the franchise before I saw this movie. I highly recommend it!

4 Reasons Why I Liked It
I actually enjoyed this movie. The extended edition is even better. This movie is funny and entertaining and here are 4 reasons why I like it: Reason 1: I like the spontaneous, improvised comedy. If you're familiar with comedy directors like Paul Feig and Judd Apatow then youโll know that usually they let the camera roll and allow the actors to go off on improv tangents. Most of the time the camera catches some pretty funny stuff. This extended edition is packed with these kinds of moments, making the film more laid back and candidly funny. It creates this weird off-beat-ness that I really enjoy watching on screen. Reason 2: As someone who is new to Blu-ray, I was blown back by how some of the on-screen elements transcend over the black letterbox bars! (examples: vapor from a ghost or the streams from the proton packs). It was pretty cool looking. Is that a thing with Blu-rays? Reason 3: I love the cast. Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Thor are some of my favorite people to watch on screen. Kate McKinnon is so weird and quirky and I love it. Reason 4: Great special features! There are tons of special features and interesting factoids about the cast, crew, and making of the movie. A lot of people didnโt like this movie. For those of you who did, you are an elite group of non-conformists who follow your heart rather than following the crowd and I commend you for it. God speed.

A fun, silly spectacle of a movie (but watch the theatrical version)
What a shame that this movie was killed at the box office by the misogynistic fanboy online hate parade. Because, YES! it's a fun, silly, truly well done reboot of the original that packs nearly the same laughs and spectacle. Standout performances from McCarthy, Leslie Jones (a star is born!) and Kate McKinnon (same thing!), and a tidy little script that triumphs friendship over romance and goofy laughs over mean-spiritedness. What was the original again? Oh yeah, DORKY FUN, and the new one is just as goofy. Really, like the original, it's a kids/teens movie, and both times I've seen it they absolutely loved it. How nice, too, to have a sci-fi comedy that little girls can see themselves in. People have falsely condemned the movie for promoting gender politics, but that's only because there's never been a movie about SCIENCE (or at least fake silly movie science) with FEMALE LEADS. How is that revolutionary? Boys can enjoy it too (in the same way girls can enjoy the original), but it's just so nice to have ridiculous women on screen doing all the same stupid stuff the boys do. (Moms, we call it "fun scary," and both my three and six year olds enjoyed it at the theater and at home.) Sure, it doesn't have Bill Murray in his youthful prime, but consider this: if you delete Murray's four or five big laughs out of the original, this movie might actually have more total laughs. It's easily ten times better that Ghostbusters 2, and I enjoyed it more on the second viewing that the first. What a shame we even have to be defensive about its merits--just like the women in the movie, the movie itself has been unfairly taken down a peg because a bunch of men think they know better. As Leslie Jones might shout, NO THEY DOOOOON'T!! Now, as for the extended edition, skip it. Pacing is the movie's biggest problem, and the extended addition only adds more downtime. Stay with the original, it's more crisp and punchier. Trust me: in a few years people will realize this movie was unfairly pilloried at the hands of internet bullies, and wasn't given a fair chance to succeed. I just hope it gains enough grassroots support to engender a sequel, you can tell they were really just getting started.

Watch Extended Edition Only
First off, I'm a guy and the 1984 Ghostbusters film is my favorite movie. I did not like the trailers for this new movie at all. I rented the regular edition first. It was bad. Half the team was useless. The villain was poorly used. And things didn't make sense. I watched it twice to make sure I didn't miss anything. I only rented the Extended Edition hoping to have more explained about Rowan. I only expected left out jokes and other extraneous scenes. After watching this version I will say this, if the extended edition had played in theaters it would not be a flop! They edited the film to death for the theatrical cut. Seriously they cut out most of the characterization of Erin (including her boyfriend entirely) and Abby as well as Holtzman hitting on Erin! Look, this version of the film made more sense storywise and added the heart to the film the theatrical cut was missing. It literally made me care about all 4 of these Ghostbusters and made the ending far more poignant. The Extended Edition is one heck of a good movie. It is worthy.

Wasn't great, but still fun nonetheless.
(minor spoilers below) I didn't see the theatrical version, but read that this extended version was better. Given all the controversy over this, I put my expectations of it comparing with the original aside and tried to enjoy it as a standalone film...which I more or less did. I really enjoyed Bridesmaids, so the cast will appeal to you if you're also a fan. Like Bridesmaids, the writing is sharp and managed to keep us laughing for most of the movie. The plot is structured in a very similar manner as the original: while the women set up shop as paranormal investigators, the incidence of supernatural activity around NYC begins to rise at an alarming rate. There are some decent nods to the original here and there (the women first look for office space in the 1984 version's fire station, but balk at the insane 2016 rental rates), but for the most part the twists and turns are all new. And there's lots of slime. Just as I was beginning to really, really like this movie, the third act rolled around... and that's where this version really drops the ball. The plot completely drops out at the climax and the film devolves into an oh-so-predictable CGI-laden, steaming pile of crap. There's a nice reversal with Chris Hemsworth as the Ghostbuster's hipster office assistant, but his character is so annoyingly dumb that he begins to grate shortly after being introduced. The real standout here is Kate McKinnon (channelling Egon's hair from the Real Ghostbusters) who plays the dorky scientist Holtzmann. Hemsworth's dance number in the finale is pretty amusing, but it's really the only decent part of the climax. Overall, not bad but it could have been a lot better. At least there's a hint of Zuul returning after the credits roll.

Not Recommended
Mostly, not funny. Poor script. Bad directing. Many times, the story lacked a sense of urgency - despite the scenes obviously called for it. The movie could have used A LOT more humour. Also, the editor of this film seemed lost. A big dance scene, for instance, was edited out, but parts were included during the closing credits - which seemed out of place! Conversely, the location, in the show, where the dance should have occurred seemed missing something and, thereby, weird. In addition, the makers of this film seemed to be trying to live past glories by dropping many references to the original "Ghostbusters" movie, in this version. Overall, however, it was disappointing!
