Tremco Acoustical/Curtainwall Sealant was developed for acoustical sealing of drywall partitions, curtainwalls, corridors and party walls. This sealant also is used as a lap joint and perimeter sealant for polyethylene vapor barriers over fiberglass batt or other insulations and may be used in contact with polystyrene. The application of Tremco Acoustical/Curtainwall Sealant greatly increases the Sound Transmission Class (STC value) of a system and reduces the decibel level when one or more beads are applied to a joint. I'd zero experience with this stuff, but I'd read that it was the proper caulk to use to fasten down the edges of 6mil vapor barrier plastic. I couldn't find it anywhere locally, so I resorted to ordering a tube online. A few things of note. First, the tube's enormous; you can't fit it in a standard caulking gun. Second, the tube likely will arrive in a box without much in the way of packing, so it's also likely the plastic tip will be busted off and the inside of your box will be pre-gooed. My solution to both problems was to take a can opener to the tube and ladle the junk into a cake decorating bag. Then I used an icing tip on the bag to squeeze this stuff around the base of the walls. Not easy, but it worked. It's pitch black, sticky and runny like viscous tar, smells faintly like rubber (which makes sense, as it's synthetic rubber), and sticks well to plastic sheeting. It also sticks well skin and clothes and everything else in the vicinity, and lifts away in long, sticky strings. It can't be wiped off -- it'll only smear if you try. However, it can be magically removed with mineral spirits, so it's good to have a can right on hand. It doesn't set up like caulk, but stays gooey over time, so it's easy to press the plastic back into it when it gets kicked out of place. At any rate, I used this to fasten down the plastic at the base of all the walls and around the windows. I used duct tape on everything else because this stuff was so horrible to work with that I lost all will to even try after that.
