The Wagons Roll At Night [Remaster]

This is a mild but pleasant little film Bogart made after he had scored his big success in High Sierra.Interesting pairing with Eddie Albert as the somewhat reluctant store keeper turned lion tamer, working for circus owner Nick ( Bogart) who keeps his kid sister ( Joan Leslie ) on the family farm and away from circus vermin. Typical boy meets girl plot but the cast that includes Sylvia Sydney and Sig Ruman lifts the rating to a strong B film and worth watching.

Good film, well done for the year it was made

If Bogart had never made Maltese Falcon, Casablanca or Sierra Madre, this 1941 film would no doubt have been hailed as a minor masterpiece. True, Eddie Albert is a bit too gee-willikers cornpone after the first three minutes or so, and none of the rest of the cast contributes much by way of support (other than the lions, that is, and also Hoffman, the drunken Teutonic lion tamer). But Bogart is sensational. Don't be too put off by the mediocre reviews - Bogie's fans will be more than pleased, rest assured. Has anyone ever done borderline psychotic hatred like this guy? Trying to murder your kid sister's boyfriend with a lion, wow. And Warner Bros. knew enough to give his face a tight little spotlight when he's really seething away. Three stars for the supporting cast, four stars for the lions, and five stars for Humphrey Bogart!

Great film and seller

Humphrey Bogart is my favorite actor. Having said that, you may doubt my objectivity. This is a very good movie, and I'm thrilled to have it on DVD.

If you are a quick shopper looking for certain DVD titles and low-priced values, you may very well miss the line farther down the page saying this is a DVD-R on demand!The prices realized for one-off copies of movies is idiotic, and DVD-Rs are more easily damaged than pressed DVDs.Additionally, none of the "Warner Night at the Movies" bonus features are on this disc! Pay more--get less.BUYER BEWARE!

after appearing in the film that would make bogart's name "high sierra," you would have thought that "warner bros" would have been a bit more selective and careful about choosing the actor's next film. sadly with "wagons roll at night," this clearly was not the case. this film is just a routine, unremarkable and predictable affair that is actually a remake of a far superior "warner bros" film, "kid galahad." the plot is identical and that is a pity as "wagons roll at night" quickly loses all hope of displaying so much as a spark of originality. the only difference that i have noticed, is the setting. where as before, the world of boxing was covered by the studio, it is the world of the circus and travelling fairgrounds that forms the basis of this rather average film. although bogart receives and deserves top billing, his acting talent is hardly being tested at this juncture and it is just business as usual for him and also for the rest of the cast. i would sum up this film as being an agreeable time-filler but no more than that.

ニック・コスター(ハンフリー・ボガート)を団長とするサーカス一座が町にやって来る。ある日、目玉であるライオン使いの演目で、ライオンが逃げ出す事件が発生し、町は騒然となる。ライオンは、雑貨店に迷い込むが、コスターは、命知らずの店員マット・ヴァーニー(エディ・アルバート)の助けを借りて無事捕獲する。ヴァーニーの手際の良さを見込んだコスターは、彼をスカウトし、将来のライオン使いとして育てようとするのだが…。エドワード・G・ロビンソン主演の『倒れるまで』をサーカス団を舞台に移し替えてリメイクした作品(ちなみに、直接のリメイクは、エルヴィス・プレスリー主演の『 恋のKOパンチ [VHS ]』)。前作『 ハイ・シェラ 特別版 [DVD ]』で主演したものの、ワーナーの2番手俳優扱いだったボガートが、トップ・ビリング(クレジット最初)の俳優として扱われた最初の作品としても有名だ。日本劇場未公開。その賑やかで華やかな表舞台とは裏腹に、サーカスの裏側というのはどこか寂しい。本作で、ボガート扮する団長が、「サーカスは、爪はじき者、流れ者、クズの集まりさ」と自嘲気味に言う通り、堅気でない人間が自らの身体を使って、必死で人を楽しませようとすればするほどに、彼らの人生の暗さや哀しさなどが余計に透けて見えるからかもしれない。レイ・エンライト監督は、そんなサーカスに生きる人間たちの哀感と愛憎渦巻くドラマを職人らしく、コンパクトにまとめている。リメイク作ながら、気負いも奇を衒うことも一切なく、そして、定石を踏み出すこともないながらも、堅気でない者たちの吹きだまり的なサーカスの侘しく、うらぶれた雰囲気の中に、主要3人―ボガートの団長、シルヴィア・シドニーの占い師、エディ・アルバートのライオン使い―それぞれの人生の断片をドライなタッチで描出。個人的に悩みを抱えていようとも、”Show must go on”の精神で、前に進み、ワゴンで次の町へと向かうサーカスの世界と心意気を描いた佳品になっている。同様の題材を扱った『 地上最大のショウ [DVD ]』に比べ(スケール、予算、アプローチ方法が違うが)、本作が陰影深く感じられるのは(シド・ヒコックスの陰影豊かな撮影も関係しているだろう)、カラーと白黒という画の違いもあるし、パラマウントとワーナーの社風の違いということも大きいだろう。サーカスのスペクタクル(これは、デミルの好みでもあるが)に焦点を当てるパラマウントとサーカスで働く人間たち(ブルーカラー)により焦点を当てるワーナー、とその感触と味わいの違いが興味深いところだ。いずれにせよ、リメイクだろうが何だろうが、自分の領分(B級作品)を明確に自覚し、身の丈に合った演出に徹するエンライト監督は、まさに職人監督の鑑。本作以降、ワーナーのトップ・ビリングの主演俳優としての地位を不動にしたボガートは、彼のスタイルである、世をすねたような皮肉屋の人物を演じ、印象に残る。自分だけを信じ、人間嫌いな感じを漂わせながらも、実は、常にサーカスの人間たちのことを思う、タフながら、さりげないやさしさを見せる人間臭い造形が実に魅力的。自分が堅気でないからこそ、妹(ジョーン・レスリーが、純朴な美しさを振りまいている)には堅気の人間と一緒になって、幸せを築いて欲しいと願う兄心も泣かせる。ボガートの相手役である占い師を演じるシルヴィア・シドニーは、31歳という年齢になって、若さを売りに出来なくなってきた時期ということもあり、かわいらしさを残しつつも、大人の女性の成熟と落ち着き(あるいは人生に対する疲れと翳り)を見せている。持ちつ持たれつのボガートとの距離感、息もぴったりだ。本DVD-Rは、米Warner Archiveによるオン・デマンド・DVD-R。米TCM放映用に、再度テレシネされたマスターを使用したもの。ただし、レストアは一切されていないので、大きなキズが目立つ箇所もある。白黒諧調、ディテール表現ともに平均以上ではない画質だが、かつて発売されていた米版VHSの画質よりは向上している。音声も、若干ノイズが気になるが、セリフが聞き取れないというようなことはない。嬉しいことに、予告編が収録。英語字幕は、残念ながら、例によって未収録。本DVD-Rは、北米盤ながら、R-0(=All)なので、日本のR-2 プレーヤーで問題なく視聴可能。ボギーのファンには嬉しい1枚だろう。 恋のKOパンチ [VHSハイ・シェラ 特別版 [DVD地上最大のショウ [DVD
