10 out of 10
This two disc 4K UltraHD/HDR/Extended Unrated Blu-Ray HD/Digital movie set, arrived on time and undamaged. Picture, sound and its features playback is superb in this first entry of the Underworld franchise, which now includes Underworld Blood Wars, also on 4K UltraHD/HDR with rest to come in this new format over the coming months. Great movie starring Kate Beckinsale, Michael Sheen and Scott Speedman makes this movie in its new visual and audio format a must see film to watch and take in in its new glorious 4K UltraHD/HDR and soundtrack in glorious Dolby Atmos 7.1. I have made the right movie into upgrading to 4K UltraHD/HDR, including Dolby Atmos. Great cast, great storyline and stunning visual action scenes makes this movie in 4K UltraHD/HDR even better than before.

Underworld In 4k is Brilliant!!
Underworld in 4K is even better than it was in blu ray. If you are a fan of movies, and the Underworld movies in particular, treat yourself to this version of the movie. 4k movies are even clearer than 4k streaming. . . you will be impressed!

Action monster movie with revolution as the underlying theme
Underworld brought a new and original take to two mainstays of the monster genre, vampires and werewolves or lycans as they are called here. In this world the two were in constant battle. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) was a vampire Death Dealer tasked with hunting down and killing the lycans. Lucian (Michael Sheen) was the head of the lycans who had a plan to end the war by finding the last relative of the Corvinus family which gave birth to all the vampires and lycans. Lucian’s idea is to find this person and make them a hybrid vampire-lycan to re-unite the two bloodlines. This is of course opposed by the current vampire lord Viktor (Bill Nighy). The vampires definitely have the upper hand in this battle and the lycans are the oppressed. The plot then revolves around revolution by Lucian who wants to overthrow the status quo.The action scenes are very well done with a mix of special effects for the lycans and gun play and acrobatics by the vampires. The revolution theme is also highlighted as the werewolves are literally living below the surface at the bottom while the vampires are on the surface, which is the top. The movie also has a heavy Gothic style in terms of architecture, the dark tones, and the black clothing, and pale faces. It goes well with the subject matter. Here's my one complaint. When they find Corvunus' last relative and turn him into a hybrid it doesn't look a vampire-lycan mix. They could have done a lot better with that.Overall, Underworld was a very good monster mash. It wasn’t scary at all, but rather an action movie with a smattering of the oppressed attempting to change their lot in life.C

BEST vamp Ire/were Wolf movie ever!
From Kate Becksales Awesome jump of the bell tower at the opening of the move, to the end credits you are glued to your seat. you either what to be Kate, date Kate, or kill Kate, whichever is your passion, you feel something for this film. You want the Vampires to win, Micheal to be left alone and human, or you want the lighten (were wolves ) to win. the point is you pick a side, and fast in this film. And wait on the edge of your seat to see who survives.

OK as long as you understand it is not profound or great drama
This is basically an animate comic book. It seems strange that it is not based, at least directly, on a comic book, but it definitely has that feel; no doubt in part due to the influence of Blade, which IS based on a comic book. There is also some obvious imitation of The Matrix, and one scene is a total ripoff of Terminator 2.My first real objection is that if this is supposed to be science fiction instead of supernatural horror, it needs to play by the rules of science. No virus can make one able to break Newton's Laws of Motion, for example, or can allow one to defy the Conservation of Energy. Magic, I don't know, but viruses certainly cannot do that.Secondly, there needs to be some sort of rule about how much damage a monster can take before dying. I mean a rule better than plot convenience. In this movie, a hail of bullets can definitely kill a vampire or a werewolf, but only if the monster is a minor character. For the heroes and the end bosses, that rule does not apply.

The way vampires and werewolves are supposed to be.
I love this movie. Kate did an awesome job as a vampire bad***. THIS is my idea of what vampires and werewolves are, not sparkly day walkers that hang out with high schoolers despite their age #creeper. . . . Be kind on judging the effects. It's an older movie. Some of the makeup and practicals are a little wonky, but the CGI is pretty good for it's time, and I actually like the fact that it was used sparingly. I have a special love of practical effects. I love the story too. It spans that gap between fantasy and believable.

Addictive!!!!
Thanks for getting me addicted! I've now watched all the films in this series. I never watch this genre but it drew me into it like a vampire searching for a meal (Yeah, I know, bad analogy!). Have fun watching all the films in this series, I did!!!!

A lot of fun
This was an all around fun movie to watch. The sets and lighting were done very well. It involves a war between the vampires and lycans (werewolves), with a flashback to how it started. Lots of action, and interesting ammo some used on both sides. Michael was the key, and why was not disclosed early on. Viktor clearly is a very powerful vampire, being awakened after centuries of sleep. Once the cobwebs of the sleep are tossed off, he is quite a fighter. And the movie ends on a ominous note, with a clear path for a sequel. A dark movie, not just with all the rain and dark shots, but overall a menacing presence. Many will really like Selene’s tight fitting bodysuit.

Underworld is the female equivalent of 'Blade'.
Underworld is the female equivalent of 'Blade'. Whether you view that as pleasant or hideous is up to you, I for one believe it to be a refreshing change despite being released during the height of the 'Blade' franchise. The vampiric Death Dealer Selene is in the midst of an eternal war, Lycans against vampires. Convinced that these werewolves murdered her family, she's hellbent on destroying the Lycans to save her covenant. It's a complicated family tree with deathly descendants and plenty of double-crossing, which does make for an interesting story. McBride's screenplay turns traditional monsters into a gritty gang war whilst embedding genetics along the way. It feels fresh, even when watching it today, just a shame that McBride's script is littered with thin characterisation and plagued with bland dialogue. Several scenes where I became disengaged just because of how tedious the story was told. Takes itself far too seriously with all the mumbo jumbo about the Corvin bloodline, lycans, vampi...yawwwn...see what I mean? What Underworld does do well is world building. The bleak underground environment and stormy weathering creates a gothic atmosphere that would suit the accompaniment of an Evanescence soundtrack (hold onto that thought...). The production and visual designs were a dark delight and certainly assisted in enhancing the world it was portraying. Acting was functional, aside from Nighy and Sheen who gave great performances, everyone else just walked around in the darkness shooting at each other. Beckinsale definitely catapulted herself into stardom though, and clearly liked wearing leather attire ever since. The minimal use of CGI was appreciated and the final act was excitingly directed by Wiseman. It is plagued with generic sound effects, y'know the ones you could find in any horror or gothic video game, which does infuriate me slightly as it just urges me to play 'Devil May Cry' again. However, Underworld is a thinly written promising start at blending action and horror together. The question is can it maintain this level of interest? Well, you'll see...

Its a good one for sure
this might be of of my favourite Movies ever.its about vampirers and werewolves, and how they are mortal enemies, going way back. (more on that in the later Movies) and as far as the vamps know, they have pretty much won and that its mostly Pockets of them left in the world. thats where the main character exists to take them out, along several others sneaky assassins. ( you cant have them fight in broad daylight) at the same time you have some that Plays both side,s others that trying to get the upper hand by creating a New breed of hybrids thats where the guy comes in. (also for the romance thing) so plenty for everyone to enjoy.

It is what it is....
Whih is a cult classic. Not sure why, but it is! I agree that this film, although probably the best in this franchise, is not the best film of all time. Its probably not even the best vampire film (I refuse to mention the twilight series here). But there is just something about the whole series of films, but deifinitely this one, that just draws you in. For me I think its the storyline which just has that 'alright, I can stretch my imagination this far' feel about it. The acting, for the most part is very good. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I can only say: give it a try and see what you think.

Not a great UHD release.
The movie is excellent: the UHD release not so much.If you're looking for a good, crisp, sharp image of the theatrical version of the movie then hunt down the Japanese BluRay release. I'd argue that release is actually clearer and has better colouring than this UHD release. It also has less grain, and the sound is clearer. There are multiple moments in the movie, usually during quieter dialogue, where the sound becomes incredibly tinny.Of course, if you're not bothered about having the theatrical release then just sick with the current BluRay release of the extended edition.

Classic
This is what a modern vampire and werewolf movie should be like, not the neutered drivel that has made way too much money by fools who will buy anything through sheer ignorance and stupidity, as in the case of a particular run of films adapted from certain books.Underworld itself is a subtle dark film which is half drenched in gothic splendour, evoking a particularly vampyric atmosphere and the other half is all sewers and decay, bringing to mind the animalistic world of the lycans. Age old conspiracies and bloodlines drive the plot here; not that the subject matter really requires deep plot, but it is nice to see some thought put into it. The film manages to build quite a full world in its run time one that demands to be explored in more detail, in a whole raft of sequels and prequels, which happily turns out to be the case. The sound is atmospheric and at times quite eerie and minor sound effects, like growling and gun fire etc are all nice and meaty lending a nice weight the film. The film is a mix of the Matrix and Romeo and Juliet, two classic bits of entertainment, given an extra boost here with a layering of two of the most popular mythical creatures. Underworld doesn't spend overly long periods pushing plotlines, it says what it needs to and then gets on with it, if that sounds like it may be a bit shallow it really isn't because you will find that you come away with the knowledge of a pretty full world as if the tale you have just watched exists within a self contained time line, in its own universe. It is a feeling that most films fail in conveying.Another plus point to Underworld is that it has a nice lo fi late 80's early 90's feel to it, a bit like the first Robocop or the second Terminator film, it is a `quality' rather than something you can point to and for me it enhances the experience of the film, even if that may be a trick of nostalgia. All in all this is one hell of a film which should be required viewing; perfect for those vampire nights.
