Q: How do you open up the lighter fluid compartment to refill it?

You need to buy a can of butane fuel. There's a small port on the bottom of the lighter. You squeeze the lighter trigger and then push the butane fuel port into the lighter fill port and it refills it in a few seconds. The can of butane fuel can refill the lighter many times.

Great question. My lighters all ran out of fluid after 1 use so I just threw them away. I truly expected them to last longer than 1 use (fireworks for 4th of july)
