This won't work for a TiVo, but it's a great external storage device.
Sadly, this unit does NOT work with Tivo, which was the reason I purchased it. The Tivo will not recognize the unit, and evidently, and sends you to an internal error message that tells you that the only thing that works with freaking TiVo is a $170.00 Western Digital My Book AV Expander, for a 1TB drive. Now, the unit itself is USB 3 and Firewire, so I'm going to repurpose it as external storage on my Plex. The unit seems to be every well made, lockable, and overall, a good value for the money, if you are using anything other than a TiVo.

Simple yet elegant and works great!
I bought this drive enclosure because it is identical to one I purchased a couple years ago (only difference being the brand name, and possibly that the firmware on my older unit only supports up to 4TB instead of the 8TB this one supports). Very solidly built, takes no technical know how to install. Simply insert your drive in the front, close the (lockable) front door, and power on (with the USB cable or eSATA cable connected to your desktop, laptop, NAS, whatever. Works like a champ! Very easy to swap drives in and out of. One note: The front door can be tricky to open the first time as you have to 1.) make sure the door is unlocked, and 2.) if in the horizontal/flat position, pull the handle slightly to the right and then out to open the door, if in the upright/standing position, pull the handle ever so slightly down, and then out for the drive to eject from the case. Great case overall, and great value from my point of view.

Directv HR54 External Hard Drive Upgrade that easily works, do not have to be technically savy
Upgraded to WD Purple 6TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD60PURX with this box to Directv HR54 4k genie system, just plug in esata cable included and power converter, then drop in drive. System must be powered off with drive turned on then power up HR54 box, which recognizes drive very quickly. There will be a substantial delay before you the list recordings will function since drive goes through a system check to make sure that all recordings were made with your HR54 box, but having unlimited recording time is worth it. The external drive box that I had previously for the HR44 was not compatible with the HR54 which would lock up during the system check, but used the same WD Hard drive in this box.

Worked great for my DIRECTV HR54
This is the external hard drive enclosure you want for Directv Genie. I added a WD Purple 4TB Hard Drive for my setup. The engineering on this little enclosure is quite amazing. Your hard drive just slides in the front of the enclosure and you close the door. That simple. You choose if you want to lock the front door with the included Allen key. Esata and USB cables were included. I unplugged my DVR, plugged in the DVRdaddy enclosure, turned it on, and let it run for a minute or so. Plugged in Esata cable to DVR and enclosure and plugged Directv receiver back in. The HR54 did the rest. If you're looking to increase the storage capacity of your Directv system, LOOK NOWHERE ELSE.

This was too easy to use
This was too easy to use. I had a controller that died due to a power failure and I bought this one, because other sites that sell this as a DVR expansion drives with a drive installed and ready to go. This is a tool less installation. Open the box, pull the controller from the plastic wrap. Open the front door. Insert the drive, close the door, and you are done. I plugged it in and I was watching all of the previous recorded content after it indexed the drive. I use this on a DIRECTV HR44 DVR with a 4TB drive.

I ordered this to use with my Genie DVR and ...
I ordered this to use with my Genie DVR and a 4TB hard drive. It wouldn't work with my DVR via eSata, but I could access the drive via USB 3 on my laptop. I took the 4TB hard drive out and put it in an older Antec MX-1 external drive case and it worked flawlessly with my DVR. I guess my DVRdaddy was defective and I sent it back.

Can you daisy chain two or more of these together as DVR drives?
I purchased this product and installed a WD Purple 4TB Surveillance Hard Disk Drive - 5400 RPM Class SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch drive. It has worked wonderfully, and I'm wondering if there is a way to daisy chain two of them together? Either to create a live backup (RAID striping?), or purchase another enclosure with a larger drive, hook them both up to my Linux box, and do a dd command to copy everything from the current drive to a larger drive? Has anyone tried either of these and had one work successfully?

Best bang for buck
This HDD enclosure is pretty much identical to theĀ StarTech.com USB 3.0 eSATA Hard Drive Enclosure w/ UASP - Trayless 3.5 inches SATA III HDD Enclosure w/ USB 3.0 or eSATA - SATA 6 Gbps - Black Except that DVRdaddy sells it for nearly half the price, 'nough said.I honestly cannot find anything wrong with this enclosure, my only niggle with this design is the power button at the back. For quick hot-swapping I prefer the power button on the front of the enclosure. It's still a 5-star product.
