Good intro but weak on turbo & LDPC codes
I bought this book because of an urgent need to become an "instant expert" on error correcting codes, particular the modern soft codes - turbo and LDPC. Chapters 1-13, describing more traditional codes, involved a lot of new math concepts for me but were fairly easy to follow. For that part I would give five stars. However chapters 14 and 15, dealing with the my subjects of interest, try to use mathematical language to describe computer science algorithms, and it just doesn't work (at least, not for this computer scientist). It's practically impossible to keep track of what the notation means - there's no intuitive significance to something like boldface-nu-with-a-twiddly-arrow-on-top-superscript-[0]-subscript-m-prime,n. The same text written with descriptive names - as in a computer program - would probably be easy to understand (as these things go). Those two chapters I would only give one star to. As it stands it makes the Obfuscated C contest look like something out of "Beautiful Code". There's a place for math-style notation - notably, math - but it isn't here. I ended up going elsewhere for the information I actually needed, though I did learn a lot about traditional error correcting codes.

Great book
This book has a stellar introduction to the topic of Error Correction Coding. The chapter flow is very nice and the programming labs are very instructive tutorials in learning the topic. The homework exercises are very well calculated in aiding in learning this interesting topic.

A very well written Introduction to Coding Theory
Error Correction Coding is very well written and easy to follow. Explanations are concise, and the book is filled with examples as well as coding assignments that really drive the principles home.

A great book by a great teacher
I took the class the Dr. Moon and I spent some time proof-reading it. I have read other texts on this material and some of them are quite hard to understand. Usually it is because there are too few examples. In this book there are many examples to follow. There are problems that will test your theoretical and your practical knowledge of the subject. If you need an in-depth get-you-there book on this subject complete with programming examples, this is the book for you!

Brilliant. Just brilliant
Brilliant. Just brilliant. Plenty of examples and problems for those familiar with C++ programming. The theory is covered brilliantly, and lots of problems (sometimes too many) are provided to help you test and develop your understanding.
