Perfect for the kitchen chef who rarely uses one. You will find after using you will want a bigger one. All and all this great if you don't use one often. It is small but works great.

Much smaller than I expected

The pestle (the "pounder") is about the length of a long index finger. The mortar (the "bowl") is about the same length as an index finger. The mortar is also very shallow: that is to say, not deep. Now, this would be great if you have something rather small and soft that you want to grind into a powder. But only if it's a small amount, otherwise you'll have stuff flying out of the thing.I bought this to add to my collection of mortar & pestle sets. I love collecting Pharmacy -related items, and this is cute and different than the glass, ceramic, porcelain, and wood mortar & pestle sets that I already have. This hardwood mortar & pestle set made in Vietnam will do as a "souvenir" until I maybe visit that country sometime.

I wanted a smaller mortar to crush my older dog's pill every day, I didn't like the bigger mortars typically sold. This is perfect in that I wanted a smaller mortar that I could easily pick up with just one hand to pour the crushed pill(s) into his food. It is also lightweight, so picking up just one hand is very convenient. You would be disappointed if you're looking for the typical size mortar, but if you need a small size for a pill or two or for small amounts of crushing, this is good. It doesn't take up as much counter space and is nice looking.

Got this to grind up garlic. It's too small. Cloves just jump out. Interesting object of art now.

Really liked this, small and strong enough to grind herbs and other spices, really handy to have.
