Could this be used outside for a 24V sprinkler zone? I want to set one up so that my wife can easily add some time to a particular zone.

If you only use this device to control the zone then yes it could work. However if you are using the sprinkler timer on this zone also then this unit will not work as the main sprinkler timer will control the voltage.

can i use this switch on a 220v air compressor, 20a

According to the instruction sheet, the DPST version of this is good for 2hp at 250VAC, 50/60Hz or a resistive load of 10 Amps. Sounds like you need a heavier-duty switch, but what is the actual continuous HP rating of your compressor?

Could i use this to replace a intermatic model e1020? ie., is the wiring the same? also, can you suggest a model that doesn't make the ticking sound?

The model your trying to replace is a 24hr on/off timer this model is a 60 minute timer so lights will go off depending what time you set up to 60 minutes. Wiring is the same and is quiet.
