Unless you are going to conduct your own spf testing it would seem that you will in fact have to "take their word." But since very few fabrics carry a spf ratings, maybe you should try a helmet for an spf of 100.

Q: will it fit my 8 year old?

As an adult, the fit on this product was snug, not sure as to how this will translate to a child. The overall quality of the product is excellent so it wouldn't be a total loss if it is necessary to pass along to someone else.

Yes, def for sun protection, hubby uses it when he uses the light that the doctor prescribed for his skin condition. The light is very strong and is not to be used on his face, only his body.
