I have it on my hunting pack, and I take it with me every time I go camping. I also carry a ziplock bag of cotton swabs mashed in vaseline. I'm very easily able to start a fire, and I live in Portland, Oregon, a very wet place during much of the year. I just pull the cotton apart, toss a spark on, and off we go. With the knife, I'm able to easily process wood. It's a good size knife - not HUGE like a machete, but not small and flimsy either. I can baton and feather wood easily. This is my go-to knife for survival, and I've tried other things like the Leatherman Signal (which does more things but isn't particularly great at any of them, and has useless tools not worth the weight on foot), and machete-type things (too big and heavy without the ability to finely control them). It’s perfect for throwing sparks with a Fero Rod. **Q: Is this 1095 carbon steel?** A: Almost. Carbon content is similar, a but higher in manganese, the addition of silicon, plus proprietary tempering. Personally, I prefer it to 1095 blades this size. Not sure it would be feasible in a full sized Kabar. **Q: What is the best oil to prevent rust?** A: While technically correct that you can use any oil, food grade oils (vegetable, olive, etc) are best as they won’t foul the blade for food prep usage. No one wants 10-40 weight marinade. **Q: Does the blade ratain solidly in the sheath no matter which way its facing? Basically asking if its able to do left hand carry with the platic sheath** A: Greetings.... Yes, it locks either way it is inserted and holds very well. With the Multi Sheath it is the same.... use it left or right handed.... my only concern about the knife I purchased is it does not have the Morakniv logo oneither side of the blade. I have a couple friends that have the same knife and they all have the logo. I contacted Mora and they stated they do not sell any unmarked knives as that is part of the inspection process. This one is identical to the others, boxing, build, weight and maintains an edge etc.... Even without the logo I would recommend this knife. I use mine but do not abuse it. Being retired from the military and stationed in different places around the world like Panama I came across this. This knife is very well manufactured and assembled. It passed the knife throwing test and still nothing came loose on it. I used this to cut and make a Mojave Scissor Trap for teaching survival techniques of course. I cleaned the knife and it still is razor sharp. I am glad I made the purchase. It passed inspection.
