The Irish State Coach was originally built by theLord Mayor of Dublin, a coachbuilder, in 1851. It was purchased by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on a visit to the Dublin Exhibition in 1852. Today's coach is an exact copy of the original, rebuilt by the Barker coachbuilding company after a fire in 1911 destroyed the wooden panelling. It is the coach normally used for the State Opening of Parliament whre it will be seen, as in our model, with six Postillion horses carrying four footmen. It was also designed to be driven from the box abd can often be seen on other Royal ceremonial occasions being drawn by four Windsor Greys.
