I had purchased a Wen belt sander and it was a beast so I decided to try the drill press and I am glad I did. I got the box and it was extremely well packed. Putting it together was a common sense procedure that took no time. For a hundred dollar drill press I am more than impressed. I put it together in literally 5 minutes and had it up and running. Ran it and used it for a bit drilling holes and bought it mainly to drill holes for birdhouses and the occasional hole I need for furniture. The motor is very quiet and solid and the construction is awesome. I really was not expecting it to be this solid for the price. I changed the speeds on it a couple times and it went very smoothly with no issues. It has a place to mount the chuck tool which is handy and the operating handle for the press is really smooth and seems durable. Now this is a good hobby press for the novice and could handle hours of work if needed but realistically it is not a commercial grade but will take some abuse. The overall height is listed, but the drilling table to chuck distance is not. I would have liked 10 inches or more, but to get this, I can't use the table, I have to mount my vise on the base piece instead and then, there's barely enough room to clamp the work piece in the vice and use a standard drill bit in the chuck. Also, the base can't be swung back & forth to center the work piece like the drilling table can. That being said, this little drill press assembles easy. I didn't even need to open the instruction manual given my experience with shop machinery and it only took about 10 minutes to have it assembled, up and running. It has enough power to drill fairly heavy materials, and is quite sturdy. The spindle is belt driven, and came set to the slowest speed but it is extremely easy (read the directions) to change speeds. The assembled unit is not overly heavy, and really needs to be bolted down to a bench or table to keep it stable when drilling the heavier materials. I really would have liked to see a wider base to give it more stability but then I tend to be pretty heavy handed so that may be a moot point, LOL. So there is not much difference **Q: Would this drill thru a 4 by 4 by 8 post for lag bolts for patio... rookie here.** A: It's very possible if you have a longer drill bit. The issue would be if you decide to add a vice, or other holding device to the table, you may not have enough room to get the bit in and out. I bought this drill for a project and ended up returning it because there was not enough space to get the bit in and out of the chuck with the vice on table. If you put the 4x4 on the table directly, make sure you secure it. It may be wise to have another person support the end you are drilling because a 8 ft board will bend. support on the long end is a must. One important thing, this will only work if drilling on the side. If you need to drill the top, a hand drill is a must. After returning this item, I bought a Skil 1/2 corded drill. For me it worked a lot better than this. Hope this helps with making your decision easier. **Q: Does it run off 110** A: It does. **Q: Can you attach a Mortiser attachment to it?** A: A mortiser can be attached but you are limited on the thickness of the material you can use because of the limited travel on the quill. For that kind of use I would recommend the next larger drill press.
