The 9/16" Diameter x 6" Solid Carbide Round Rod is perfect for making conventional tools such as twist drills, end mills, screw taps, gun drills, etc. for the use in machining of general material such as common steel, cast iron, stainless steel, etc. Carbide is a type of metal compounded with a non-metal (such as boron, calcium, or silicon) or metal (such as cobalt, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, or vanadium). Metal carbides are characterized by their extreme hardness and resistance to high temperatures, and are used as abrasives, and in cutting, drilling, grinding, and polishing tools. In the world of metallurgy, to have something that is precision ground is to have a product with a high degree of exactness in which produces a smooth finish. To be polished is to have a smooth finish which enhances the look of an item, prevents contamination, removes oxidation, creates a reflective surface, and prevents corrosion. To have a chamfered end is to have a symmetrical sloping surface at the edge or corner. C2 carbide grade is used on drill bits (end mills, other tools, etc.) to cut cast iron and certain non-ferrous materials (brass, aluminum, etc.). C2 is on the soft end of the carbide scale. It's needed for cast iron and brass because of the way the material "breaks" instead of shears. The harder carbides will chip or crack on cast iron.
