If your roo isn't an a$$ like mine, the pink MIGHT be okay.
My rooster saw the pink one and said NOT RED BUT CLOSE ENOUGH and attacked my hen! I'm going to try and put it on his favorite girlfriend and see if he is more reluctant to be a jerk about it. The tan and black ones are fine. They've stayed on my girls and definitely help because he was shredding their lower backs and wings. My roo is a male mix that would have resulted in an Easter Egger if he'd been a lady, so he's an aggressive dillhole with an over-active sex drive. I can't even wear a reddish shirt around him without him trying to square up. I suggest testing your roos with the color pink before purchase.Edit: put the pink one on his main squeeze. He was a little upset, but didn't attack her or cause as much of a ruckus. Success!

our poor Easter Egger hen suddenly had a bald spot on ...
Hen saver indeed. Just in time for the frigid winter months, our poor Easter Egger hen suddenly had a bald spot on her back between the wings. Though not observed regularly, it is assumed due to some bullying from the other hens in the way of feather plucking. Worried that this would continue, and that unprotected skin would get frost bite, a solution had to be found. This was it. It is such a cute little apron looking thing but has a nice quality canvas to it. The elastic bands are not two separate bands sewn in, rather one long band which allows it to slide. This is important for handling the hens delicate wings. They don't exactly sit still while putting this on, so they pull and jerk while threading it on. Being the band slides, one side/opening can get quite large to help you get the wing through. Then slide it the other way and thread the other wing through. It can be done yourself, but bring a friend for quicker "install". This has been worn now for a couple months and the feathers have just about come all the way back in. The hen only fussed about it the first day, and now I can't even imagine her without it on. With these sub-zero nights coming, if she continued to lose feathers, it could have gotten really bad. This may have saved her life. Now if only there was something like this for her poor face muffs, as those have become the latest plucking target.

Don’t Hesitate on This Purchase
**Tip: put the saddle on at roosting time. That way the chicken is calmer and can adjust to how it feels overnight. The product is sturdy and fits well. We used the size Large on our Austra White...she is not a big girl. It protects our hen’s back and she should have feathers growing back soon. Also keeps them warmer in the cold weather.Oh and the directions are written by someone with a great sense of humor. Still makes me laugh.I would not hesitate to by another if your chickens are being pecked on by other hens or if they have rooster damage.

Helps Protect The Girl's Backs From My Overactive Rooster.
I had to buy 3 of these, so far, and it looks like I will have to order 2 more. I got a rooster by accident (thought he was a pullet) and he is enjoying taking care of the 6 other hens. But little by little, their backs are becoming bare. Someone recommended that I put a saddle over their backs. It has really helped save their backs from the activity of the overactive rooster! It will be interesting to see their feathers covering their backs again, if I ever take the saddles off!Update: I did take a few of the saddles off, and some of the girls did not grow feathers back yet, but, I know the saddles helped to protect the girls from ended up with bare backs and with the potential of getting infections. Some of their backs were red and irritated looking. I also think the saddles helped during the cold winter. I have 2 chickens left with their saddles on and it may have helped them to stay a little warmer during the winter when it got extremely cold out.

Your hens will thank you.
Product fit pretty well and it has stayed on for almost a month now. It does occasionally flip up and stick out like a cheesy superhero cape. Sometimes that happens first thing in the morning as the hens are being chased out of the coop by 'Twerp" the overly amorous rooster. Then when he pounces on the hens, the apron offers less than ideal protection. That's not to say it doesn't help - I believe it usually does. And after weeks of that very rude wake up call, the apron has held up well. And that's saying something; Twerp isn't into candle-lit dinners and long walks on the beach. The way that rooster bulldogs those hens, I can see why some folks call this thing a hen saddle.

Doing the job
I got it for a hen that was injured by my roosters. It is easy to out on & take off. She isn’t bothered by it much. She just can’t fly up to the high perch in my coop. We thought we were going to lose her due to her injuries, but this has protected her while she heals. I may just leave it on her to prevent that injury from reopening.

Works great for Orpington hens
I have three good sized Orpington hens and one very large orp rooster, all a year old. He's been getting frisky with them a little too often on these long winter days shut inside, and the girls are starting to lose a lot of feathers on their backs. I ordered the tan in a large and put in on the hen with the most feather loss. It fits her perfect and has worked like a charm. It stays in place and after a few minutes of initial picking at it with her beak she's now acting completely normal like it's not even there. She can still fly up to the roost just fine and she's protected from further damage so her feathers can grow back. The material is soft enough but still durable feeling, and the elastic strapping doesn't seem to be cutting into her at all. I'll be ordering two more for my other hens.

Works great for my road island red
Works great for my road island red. She is the favorite of the rooster and he is pretty big. Poor hen ended up with a big wound under the wing. After separating and treating her (and trimming and filing down rooster nails) I put on the hen saver and put her back with the flock. It covers the back more than under the wing where her wound is but it is protecting that spot really well.It has come off once but over all it stays on good. She had a little fit when I put it on but she was fine in about 10 mins. She is pretty calm hen I am guessing any of my others would have had a fit for much longer. It also washes nice.

Great little saddles
Great little things, helps prevent the chickens being pecked when they lose their feathers. This give the chicks time to grow their feathers back.

Work good
We had an abundance of roosters over for a little while and 3 of our 12 hens were getting over-bred while waiting to get the roosters up to a decent weight. We purchased these, and it kept them off of them so they didn't get tore up. The only problem with them being is the cape covers their oil gland so they can't preen and groom themselves properly with them on. You have to take them off for a night once a week to let them groom so they don't get ragged looking.

Hen saver.
Purchased this after hen was gashed open by rowdy rooster. Very difficult to get on and seemed to fit strange on my barred rock girl. I only had it on her for a cpl days and it seemed like she was sweating underneath and her wing feathers got chaffed off. I think she healed faster once I took it off. Love the idea, but can not recommend this product.

Fantastic product - need more colour variations!
My poor chickens were getting mauled by my roosters! This is an easy solution to save their feathers. It seems to fit nicely and not bother them at all. I put it on, and they make some minor adjustments to it themselves. I've already taken it off to wash. Just threw it in the washer and hung to dry.I'd love to see more pretty options for colours and patterns.
