It has a number of support columns built in throughout the base. The top of the step is textured presumably to make it non-slip; we use it primarily in the garage so I can’t comment on how well that world. When I bought this it seemed insanely expensive, but it’s really the only wide step able to handle over 300lb and so far has worked quite well for our needs.
