Works with cat 5 short cable but not cat 6 longer cable. What am I missing?

Not sure of your problem, as the route I had to take for may cables was about 100 ft of CAT 6. I originally had CAT 5 non shielded cables, and after installing LED lighting with a dimmer switch, it would really screw up the signal. I assumed it would overlay a frequency that would chop up the transmitted signal by the extender. I called AV Access they thought so also. I replaced with CAT 6 shielded cables and the problem went away.

What version USB does this device support?

It is not for USB, it is a HDMI extender

Can the Ethernet cable be connected through a network switch or does it have to be direct?

Dear Rolando, Thank you for asking. Sorry it must be connect from transmitter to receiver directly. Can not through any switch. (AV Access)
