Lacks something
Somewhere Only We Know: Callaway Family Book 8 is by Barbara Freethy. This book is a quick one to read but it is full of suspense. It also isn't as interesting as the others have been. The Callaways and their friends and relatives are all very realistic and come into your home as you are reading. You are never sure who will come in next.Burke is the only unattached Callaway child and he is the oldest. However, he had been engaged to Leanne parker before her death in a car accident. A fellow fireman, Mitch Warren, was also in love with Leanne and has blamed Burke for her death even though Burke was on duty that night. Mitch has hired a PI to look into it. Mitch is even more obsessed with this idea three years after Leanne’s death. It is at a memorial for Leanne that Mitch brings this out into the open again by attacking Burke. He hit Burke and knocked him into a waitress and Burke hit the floor along with her. When Burke looks up, he realizes he knows her, Maddie Heller.Maddie is a free spirit who has traveled fulfilling a bucket list her twin sister had made before her death as a young girl. Maddie has only a few things left on her list; but she has ended up back near home. She is looking for a job and has sublet an apartment. When Burke came back to the party to talk to Leanne’s parents, he ends up taking Maddie home only to find she has been locked out of the apartment and evicted. Having no place to go, she ends up at Burke’s apartment. He offers her a place to stay until she gets situated. Since Maddie has been in love with him since high school, she hesitates but having no choice, accepts. Can things get any more messed up in Burke’s life? With Maddie in the picture, yes it can.

sweetness. love. adventure. mystery.
These books have something that most other romance series don't...an element of mystery. I have enjoyed meeting the Callahan family. They are such a close knit group with strong community ties.It was fitting that Burke's story was last, it helped build up the intrigue of this oldest son who suffered a great loss. Sometimes you don't now what you are missing until it runs right into you-- like Free-spirited Maddie. As much as Burke helped her, she gave him so much more. These two are awesome together...oil and water making deliciousness. You can imagine the adventures their life will have.I am so glad that the mystery part of the story didn't result in more heartbreak.Sweet story. This story had a couple of errors that would not have been picked up with spell-check (the word "good" when it should have been "food"). One more reading of the kindle version by an editor would have caught the errors. I like that these stories don't always follow the stereotypical romance formula, I think the adventure/mystery helps eliminate that!!Great series. Sweet with a bit of spice.

My favorite of the series
I'll be honest, of all the Callaway books, this was the one I was not really looking forward to. I didn't understand Burke in the earlier books. He was too...stiff for my liking. But I REALLY got into this one. In fact, this is the five star Callaway book for me. Burke lost his fiancee in a car accident and another man, Mitch, is determined Burke was responsible for that accident. An old friend, Maddie, returns to town during the middle of all this and she and Burke keep getting thrown together. When they start spending more time together, sparks fly. Some even ignite.Even though I did figure out early on who the real culprit was in this book, I loved the story. I loved reading it and I truly enjoyed getting lost in Burke and Maddie's world. I'm sad that this group of Callaways have finished telling us their stories....but I am starting on the cousins ASAP.

Opposites Attract
Opposites attract. Compelling story of opposites finding out they truly compliment each other. Believable characters, enjoyable dialogue and easy to follow story line.Great idea of Valentines Day:"Heck, you dyed the mashed potatoes in the school cafeteria pink."She laughed. "I totally forgot about that. It was a Valentine's Day special. I figured not everyone was going to find candy hearts, carnations or valentines in their locker, so it was my love letter to the nerdy kids, the wallflowers, the people like me who didn't fit in."These stories are stand-alones with HEA's.I may re-read this story and always look forward to other works by this author.

No wow factor.
This wasn't a terrible book. It was just to vanilla for me.This book had ALOT of family members. Which is great. I love when the H & h's family are included in the book. In this book though I felt like WAY to much time was spent on the H explaining to the h who everyone was, what they did, who they were married to, and so on. Also there was so much time spent talking about how they spent there time in the past. I like to get some of that information, but it took up the entire middle of the book. There were supposed to be two dangerous story lines. Both of them were barely. . . well . . . in the book at all. There wasn't much investigating. What there was of it, was done by other people. We aren't a part of that. We are just told about after the fact. They talked about in the beginning, and at the end, and that's it. The hero's part of finding out what happen was him talking to three people at the end of the book.I knew who the killer was the very first time the character appeared, in the beginning of the book.No sex until about 75% in. Started and over in a few paragraphs. No details. Which would have been okay if I felt any strong emotions from them afterwards. I just didn't feel much need or passion. At about 78% the meat of the story finally started. It got more interesting then, but it was over before I knew it, then we were back to a so/so romance. So for me there was just no WOW in this book. It's light on the romance, light on the mystery. That may be exactly what some people are looking for. Just not me.

I loved reading Barbara Freethy and will read more
I loved reading Barbara Freethy and will read more. A terrific love story but would do better at doing a review if I could do it right after I read the book. Could you arrange this. Will request more Calloway sequences. A relaxed read for an older lady.
